I'm going to New York City in December and was wondering if anybody had any suggestions for good places to eat. I'm open to all types of places.
TIA

quote:Good luck getting a table, and if you want Italian food, there are literally dozens of places that are better. Marea, Convivio, Peasant, Hearth, and others. My first choice for Italian if I were going to NYC tomorrow, would be Maialino in the Gramercy Park Hotel. I had one of the best dishes I've ever had at Marea: fusilli with red wine braised octopus with bone marrow, and I fricking hate octopus.

You can't go wrong with any Danny Meyer restaurant, Gramercy Tavern, Union Square Cafe, The Modern, and what I think is the best restaurant in NYC: 11 Madison Park.
If you want a steak, go to Sparks, or go to Peter Luger in Brooklyn.
Have a great time, and let us know where you go and how you liked it.

Yeah, it's a restaurant that's famous for being hard to get into. They essentially have a standing clientele and almost no open tables. I know several people who have been there and were completely underwhelmed.

you are going with a lot of highend places... while i love that i unfortunately don't have the $$$ during this trip...
del friscos is near my limit... on this trip i am not looking for the all around experience (service, setting, presentation... so on) i just want the best bang for the buck food in the city....
got any suggestions for that...

Coherency isn't your stong point tonight. Very strange, because you are one of the best posters on TD.com. Liuazza's by the track is pretty terrible. Go to the Liuazza's on Bienville for fried artichocke hearts and cold draft beers.

Most of those are mid level places for NYC. EMP is definitely higher end. It's NY, so things are going to be relatively more expensive. But some of my favorite lower end places are:
Spotted Pig
Blue Ribbon - one of my favorites irrespective of price.
Shake Shack
Blue Smoke
'Wich Craft
Momofuku Ssam Bar, or Noodle Bar
Delis:
Zabars
Barney Greengrass

The Liuzzas a couple of blocks off Houston in the Village is money.

what about some good breakfast locations.
Posted on 11/30/10 at 10:02 pm to bryso
I'd eat cheap for lunch and splurge on a nice dinner or two.
Cheap lunches:
greys papaya
street meat (halal food)
pizza (joes around bleeker and 6th ave has good slices)
corner bistro (the port of call of NYC--good burgers and mcsorleys beer in a dive bar atmosphere)
for cheaper dinners, go ethnic (Indian, Korean BBQ, Chinese). You can also get steak frites at Les halles for under 25 bucks.
Make sure to do at least one nice place, like a gramercy tavern.

I've been to NYC probably a hundred times, but most of my visits were business, so I usually ate breakfast in my hotel. When I didn't eat in the hotel, I would grab breakfast at Bouchon in the Time Warner center, which was right near my hotel. When I've been there for leisure my favorite place for a sit down breakfast is probably Balthazar. The delis are solid for breakfast, and there are a friggin ton of awesome donut places/bakeries, like the Donut Factory, etc. Cafe Sabarsky in the Neue Gallerie is basically like being in Vienna and is a cool place if you're in the museum district.

For breakfast, I would just do a bagel and coffee. Save the money for food you can't get in Louisiana. Sarah Beth's is a decent breakfast place, but overrated and overpriced in my opinion.
