Not really looking looking to buy a new vehicle right now. I was going to wait on a 2012 Avalanche, new body style coming out, but a super clean 08 just came up that I can buy for $31K without my trade in. Should I pull the trigger on the 08 or wait for the newer model, knowing it's going to be about $15K more?

Just wait, if you bought this, sounds like you'd still want the 2012 truck.

You'll get more value with the '08. I don't know if that's a factor for you in your decision.

I'd never buy a new car unless I had so much money that price wasn't an issue. I see a car as a means of transportation only. For some people it's more than that. Nothing right or wrong really, just a matter of personal preference on what you want to spend your money on. I haven't had a car payment in 9 years - I'd rather spend that $350/month on something else. But for some people, they get $350 worth of gratification from the new car. Do what makes you happy -

The new body style might be ugly.
I'd rather save the money.

Got the price from the owner of the dealership, I've bought 10 vehicles from them over the years.
He just called back, dropped it to $30K.

ETA: It's a fully loaded Z71 Model
No 8 track player

Update: They have offered me $5500 for my '03 Tahoe with 110K+ miles on it.

Might be too good of a deal to pass on.

That's absurd.

depends on how much you finance and what the difference in interest would be in buying a new versus used...should be able to get incentives on the new one that include a special interest rate..but buying used is typically a better angle only because the bulk of depreciation is on someone else

This is true. My current vehicle is a '07 I bought for $30k and as of today I have between $5-7k in equity without putting anything down.

No, it really doesn't at all.

Yeah, that's the problem, 20% depreciation for the first 30% of the cars life is ridiculous.

Thats way too high for the 08..

I was looking at the 2010 models that were 42k and they fell to 32k NEW at different points over this year due to incentives.

As I have said many times here look at what the rebates and dealer incentives are. In many cases it is cheaper to buy new than what people are asking for a used truck.

Its kinda messed up but the industry put themselves in that position to make sales.

You should be able to get a 2wd 2010 LT new for around 32600. There is a 5k rebate on them new.

3k rebate on 2011 models.

The 2 year depreciation from the 08 to the 10 is close to the same as the rebate.

That said I dont know if I would want to buy right before a model change. Plus the 5 year depreciation of the avalance is not so great at 19k.

They give you $8K for the trade and do $26K on the truck or you walk. Seriously, I've seen Red River Chevy here in Bossier asking $14K for '02 and '03 Tahoes.

ETA: Buyer's market, brah.

Realistically, this is what it should take or I would feel like you are being screwed.

I echo THFs feelings.

The Z71 is usually a 4-wheel drive, which is heavier and doesn't depreciate as much. That's why it is more than just an 08 Avalanche.
