Interesting article in American rifleman this month about it. Anyone read it? The author brought up some very interesting points. Many that disprove some theories and understoods in the hunting community.

Knock down power is a greatly misused term. You dont really knock down anything. What your bullet does is destroy tissue, organs, and break bones,denying blood and oxygen to the body and that is what kills game. There are many , many reports of shooting very small antelope with elephant calibers and they sail right thru and the animal acts like it is not even hit for a few seconds before toppling over.
This in my mind and experience dispells the notion of knock down power.
But what specifically is your question???

After bowhunting a few years, I realized comparing rifle rounds if simply a waste of time. To sum up, they are all lethal to deer.

People seem to forget the types of weapons and firearms that where used thruout this country on game in the early years. Even if you only want to go back to the 1800's. Guns and weapons that people now a days would raise there noses up at if mentioned as large game killing rounds and calibers.

I believe there to be some truth to the whole knock down power, I have taken deer with several different calibers, and there is a world of difference between a .243, .270. 30-06, 300 mag, 7mag. 3 years ago I purchased a buffalo classic .45-70 and I would bet my life on it that gun would make people a believer in knock down power. I shot a 120lbs doe at 6 yards and i knocked her completely off of all 4 legs, that is knock down power.

I remember a show that I think was on the History Channel were they talked about how popular the M1 carbine was and how a lot of soldiers preferred it to the M1 Garand. They showed a demonstration of the impact in ballastic clay from both weapons and the M1 carbine showed much more damage even though it is a "less powerful" bullet. Basically, because the carbine bullet was slower, it expanded better and transferred more energy to the target while the Garand bullet would penetrate and in a lot of cases pass right through. The theory was that there was more "knock down power" in the carbine than in the Garand.
Personally, I tried the Remington Scirocco rounds a few years ago in my .30-06 as they seemed to have better ballistics. However, I was less than pleased when I used it to shoot deer. In two cases, good shot placement led to long tracking as the bullet seemed to pass right through the deer without expanding, leaving only a small hole on both sides of the deer.
But then again, I could be completely wrong.

The type of bullet you use also affects the "knock down" power.
How well it mushrooms goes a long way in transfering the "knock down" energy to the animal,

Just like was earlier statement about the 45/70. That's not "knock down" power as it is traditionally thought of. For a deer to be knocked down it has to suffer some neurological system. Either damage or "shock" to his spine usually. So in light of that it's more about wound channel and shot placement then "knock down power".

Think of it this way, if your chosen projectile had enough energy to knock a deer off his feet (hooves) then are able to absorb the recoil on the other end. Remember ole newton.

I have hunted with an ar15 .223 and killed deer and droped them on the spot or within 20 yeards. Its shot placement. Im a pretty good shot i guess.
