Many things can effect "knock down" power.

Shot placement, speed of projectile, weight of projectile, solid, holopoint, or ballistic tip, etc.

I shot a deer last year with my .257 weatherby at a little over 250yds with 115 grain ballistic tips. The shot was a little high. The bullet exploded (as ballistic tips are suppose to do) and created alot of damage including spinal damage. The deer dropped in its tracks. Now, if the shot had been lower more in the ribcage I don't know that the same thing would have happened. I think it dropped mainly because of the spinal cord damage but it never moved after it was hit so I don't know.

This is why I always shoot for where the neck meets the shoulders. Gives you a several inch target that will drop them like a sack of shite. If shot is a little low it severs the windpipe and jugular. Dead center it severs the neck high you miss. Best part is you don't mess up any usable meat.
