I'm thinking about buying one for me and the kids to do some trail riding on.
Is this a good bike? Anybody have one?

i have a 2007 Honda 420 ES 4x4
good bike. i use very rarely tho...only 18 hours since purchase in 2007. to be honest, i have spent more money on regular maintenance (i have oil changed before and after every hunting season) than gas!
at the same time i bought it, a couple buddies bought polaris rangers for the camp, so the 4wheeler is pretty useless. considered selling.....but its not really in the way, and there for emergency.

I bought 2 of them last December. I'm very satisfied with them. Just don't get the camo fenders, they will peel off leaving you with a tan bike. We do a lot of riding all year long and have had no problems. Mine is the 4x4 manual shift w/ power steering, which is wonderful and my sons is white electric shift.

Get the Foreman you will be so much more pleased. I've had both the Rancher and the Foreman. I wouldn't trade my foreman for any other bike.

dumb question but is an ES essential an automatic?

Electric Start
Yes...it is automatic.

quote:No. ES (Electric Shift), means the shifter is on the handlebar. You use one thumb for the gas, the other for shifting. It's not as convenient as it sounds, because its hard to hold a beer and drive.

If you plan on putting anything over a 26" mud tire on an automatic, your not gonna like it. The auto is not geared low enough. The ES and manual shift have the same gears. The auto with IRS is ok for trails with trail tires, but not for mud and mud tires.

I advise no to electric shift. Use your foot like a man.

If you read any Honda board you will see this over and over. ES is bad on the Hondas especially the Foremans. I have a Foreman 450 and love it except the ES. I have had to repair it several times and it still gets tough to shift when the engine is hot or when you are using the battery to run attachments. With a dead or near dead battery and ES you are stuck in or out of gear unless you get one of the shift wrenches.
Avoid ES

+1...ive got an 07 420 rancher and i love it...i made sure i got it with as little electric or automatic on it bc then theres really nothing to break...its been awesome to me so far...got 27" itp 589s on it and it'll get through most anything for me

I hate my ES...the bike itself is amazing. I just hate the shift. Right now it's not working right and when I put the key in my gears flash..which means my ES isn't working. So I've been using the mannual shift tool on it..

I went to Friendly Yamaha on Airline and bought the Honda 420TM today. Manual shift,2wd and fuel injected. Decent price too $3799 with a free basket rack on it.
Feels like it has some decent power and I don't mind the stock tires.
There was a Yamaha Grizzly 700 in there on 30" tires that looks like a small!!

Love my 420. As far as power, me and my dad togther push 500 lbs and we hve double headed a couple of times with no prob. I will probably never need anything more than the two wheel drive 420 and if I do, I prob shouldnt be doing whatever I am doing anway.
