Hit the gym today for the first time in weeks. Feels good man. Need to get back into the routine. One of my old friends has decided to start losing weight, and I'm thinking about challenging him to a weight loss competition. He wants to lose 30 or 40 pounds by May (I'm not sure what he currently weighs, just his end result). I want that extra motivation and drive to get me to the finish line, or as close as possible.

The office comp has kept me in check for 7 days. So competitions can be great.
Week 1 results are in and thanks to a movement more amazing than Beethoven's 5th, I am in second place with a 3% drop for the week. The leader dropped 3.44% but I saw him drink a couple of glasses of water before the initial weigh-in.

I can't wait to run my first 5k. I'll get there.
How are you training for it? I started the couch to 5k deal. Hopefully this gets me back into running shape

Couch to 5k is good. I followed it all the way through and managed to do it within the 9 weeks I believe. Word of warning, if you stop running for a few months you will be surprised how much you can go backwards. I've had to restart it from the beginning.
I downloaded the zombies run version of c25k and started with it. I wish it gave better data at the end though. I end up having to have it and runkeeper going at the same time. Also, since it integrates music it would be nice if it supported spotify since that's all I use anymore.
So I've kinda sucked at the trough this week due to working late but my weight hasn't been hurt too badly.

I'm going to polish off the rest of the beer in my fridge as fast as possible and start getting serious about diet and exercise to finish off this last 40 pounds

Contest Starting Weight - 195.8
Competition Loss - 3.6
Day 9 of 90
Yesterday's Calorie Count - 1300
Just about cracked last night. I was pretty damn hungry but I had nothing in the house to cheat on and I am sick and too tired to go out and get something.
My head feels like it is going to pop.

I've been hearing lots of talk from one of the girls at work that a good thing to do on a diet is to splurge once a week do get your metabolism revamped. I'm not sure how I feel about that. I'm happy watching the weight go, so I don't think I'm going to cheat at all until I get a few more lbs off. What y'all think?

One splurge a week could destroy all of the hard work from the other 6 days.
Many people advocate shocking the system with a higher calorie day when on a plateau but it from my experience, the time it takes to lose the weight from the high calorie day, that time would probably have been more than enough to break the plateau.
I'm not saying you can't ever cheat. I did but it was rare or on special occasions. Not once a week.

one way to incorporate a cheat would be to make sure you have surplus calories to eat a few days before and after. and also by cheat i mean an ice cream or a big dinner or something, not thanksgiving. (like if you're on a 1500 cal/day diet go 1300 for two days before and after). You'll have 800 extra calories to eat but would still be able to splurge.
Not that i need any more motivation but I'll start posting in here with my progress. I lost about 50# back in 2010 to get down to the 215-220 range. Back to around 230 at the beginning of this year and my goal is <200 by May 1st. I'm at 1500 cal a day and I'm back on my running program. I used a 13 wks to 10k the first time and that's what I'm doing again. Anyway, there's no doubt that the "eat less/move around more" method works, just gotta stick to it. Calories in/calories out. Simple math...

Weather should be alright for Saturday morning. It's going to be a little warm for this time of year. Which race are you running? I would like to offer some advice for your run. Try not to start out to fast, the whole excitement of the start and other runners can cause this to happen. You do not need to do any carb loading for the run. Eat what you normally would tonight. Try not to eat anything within a 2 hours from the start and limit fluids before the start as well.
To those asking about the c25k programs, when I started running about a year ago, I used this program to get going again. It works great. It’s set up to have you run a 5k in about 30 minutes or a 10 minute pace. That is where I was when I finished it as well. Good luck with the race and good luck to those starting the program.
In other news about running, this weekend is the last “long run” before the LA half.
TLDR ect ect
