looks like he may have been alright if he was just wearing a seatbelt.

Wow what a terrible accident in a 51' boat no less.

The waves don't look too bad until you see the boat in the trough. Hard to believe a boat that size would do that.

How? I bet the captain was killed when he struck the deck. There doesn't look like anything the guy on the other boat could do.

captain had a bad shoulder supposedly so he wasn't able to control the boat as well as he should have. That inlet is world famous for being hard to navigate. sad story. Good article from Peter Wright about it.

Camera guy was on land, Its a very narrow inlet. Major swells because of large volume thru a narrow inlet. They also have several full time live cams on the inlet.

Boats get swamped all the time there.....

That inlet in notoriously dangerous and very hard to navigate in normal conditions. The seas have been very rough here because of the hurricanes.

I know some hardcore kingfishermen that have refused to enter the inlet until conditions changed.

As someone pointed out a seat belt probably would have saved the captain's life. I'm also curious about how he tried to overtake that wave and why he even attempted it if conditions were that bad.

never seen a seat belt in a boat, much less a 50+ foot sportfisher

I haven't seen one either. Just noting that it would have saved his life had there been one.

I just wonder how he got caught in the trough and if the conditions warranted waiting out at sea for a bit. He evidently had been there 10 years so he had to know the routine.

the article I posted earlier kind of explained the situation. He had a torn rotator cuff and probably wasn't able to operate the throttles and the wheel at the same time very effectively. Had he been able to it wouldn't have happened the way it did

Just read that. Makes sense. Man, sad to think curtains may have saved his life.

The captain broke his neck when he hit the deck, and was taken off life support the next day.
