What if, in the vast hierarchy of priorities, it is more important to develop your starting QB?
This kid has started for more than a season now, his development is not happening. If we continue to "develop" him at this rate he might be a sec caliber qb in 20 years.

My question is how we used Lee
We were up by 22 points with 10 minutes left in 4th quarter and we all expected to see Lee get some quality snaps. Instead Miles waited too late IMO to get him in with about 5 minutes left in the game.
Once in the game all Lee did was hand the ball off. I am sorry but there is no secret that passing confidence is Lee's issue we need to develope not his handing off ability. The game was in hand and I guess if all you are looking for is to close out the game you hand the ball off, however I think if your looking past this game and QB development you need to let Lee pass.
IMO Miles let this opportunity for Lee to develope slip by yet again. We are going to need him in a game where he has to pass to win ...not just hand the ball off. Worst case MSU intercepts the ball...with our D and the field position this was not going to cost us the game...but it did however cost valuable learning experience in developing your number 2 QB.

Cool. I hope Meechicken appreciates our development of Miles into their next coach. I just hope our next coach brings home another crystal football.

I know its something you dont want to see, but it is a great accomplishment. Having a great kicker can take you a long way against teams like bama and uf. Especially when our d is going to keep those games close.
In my eyes we havent even really got to the cupcakes on our schedule. Our d is something special. We dont even play a team as shitty as duke, nichols would prob beat them.

I'm still scratching my head on all the four-WR sets I saw last night. When is the last time JJ made it to his third option, let alone fourth?

am I the only one thinking that Jefferson actually played a pretty decent game against UNC - pretty much on par with how he played coming down the stretch of last yr with fewer sacks/ bad decisions - and the coaches have WAY overreacted to the Vandy game?

If things continue like this, I will start to think that maybe Miles is trying to avoid a QB controversy by not putting Jefferson in a position to fail.
Jefferson played well last night, based on the plays that were called. But he is a junior. We have talented receivers. There is no reason we shouldn't be more potent on offense.

IF miles plays not to loose and goes 14-0 do we still fire him?
IF miles goes 14-0 b/c of not loosing a game do we still want saban back?
i was sitting on near the south end where most of the interceptions happened (and the jj score.)
the lady and i next to me agreed that we were really getting an incredible game.
then, i wondered if it would be ok if chavis and the defense actually win every game for us.
then, i wondered if the ranterds would still want to fire gc and lm b/c they didn't WIN any games.
wow, sometimes the rant can't be happy about nuthin'.

But would you bet money that we will go 14-0 with this offensive philosophy? I know I wouldn't.
Ultimately, ranking near 100th in total offense year after year will hurt the program.

Before last night, it was "3 and Crowton". I too agree that playmakers are not the issue - piss poor play calling is.
We must lead the league in negative plays from scrimmage.

So far I have seen same plays over and over every game. To conservative with the play calling. Let him throw the football and try to develop. This is getting old with Crowton.

I said this on another post last night and I'll say it again:
1.) The coaching staff is calling plays that JJ is comfortable with. Unfortunately, he doesn't seem to be too comfortable with much beyond handing the ball off and roll-out passes where he only has one side of the field and 1-2 reads to deal with.
2.) If we are hell-bent on being an option team and not developing a vertical passing attack, then Shep is the better athlete for that style of offense.
3.) If we want to have an offense that is on par with our defense and special teams, then Lee is the best option.
I heard Hanagriff go off on a pro-Jefferson rant last night and he made the comment that he forgot the part where Jarrett Lee all of the sudden became Dan Marino. The fact is, Lee was thrown into a messed up situation in his Freshman year and while everyone remembers the bad (INTs), they forget that the kid threw for almost 1,900 yds and a rating over 116. Granted, the INTs were huge but, again, we're talking about a freshman who was thrown to the wolves too early.
The coaches and the pro JJ folks on here keep saying that they are trying to "develop their young QB". They need to remember that they have TWO young QBs to develop. Lee deserves meaningful reps.

It blows my mind why we are still doing this shotgun read option bullcrap every play. If out strength is going to be our running game, why can't we just line it up in the I formation an shove it down their throats? Seemed to work in the 4th quarter of the vandy game. I do t know how much more handoffs to Ridley in the shotgun for half a yard I can take.

Hell yes. I don't care what QB you want to play, but scrap the option and line up in the I and bust people in the mouth! This offense has NO identity and it is hindering the progress that could be made.

I agree with alot of posters that the playcalling needs to change. However, if we have 3 or 4 wide, you can't tell me the only open receiver is the slot receiver. Jefferson needs to shoulder most of the blame for not making the throws.

If JJ's first read is covered its over! He still looks like a freshman to me. If we can't throw the ball over 6 yards we are doomed in a few more games. U can't run with 9 in the box. So I guess its field goals from now on.

They have ZERO confidence in him, and honestly I don't either. Miles said last week they were dumbing down the offense, and thats exactly what they did. It's not going to win the big games, but I really dont think they have a choice. As the announcers on tv said, JJ didn't play horrible, but he wasn't great either.
Posted on 9/19/10 at 3:53 pm to Chicken
the problem is we are afraid to let JJ read a defense...
i would be too considering how wide open RR was all of last night and JJ never found him
