I grew up only a few miles from henderson Louisiana so i consider myself a true cajun and my relatives are pure cajun.I graduated from college and have now moved of state due to work but when i watch the show i'm not sure if i'm offended as to how coonass these people or how i miss being back there fishing the basin. So i'm asking do you guys feel offended of how cajuns are betrayed?or you ok with it?

quote:If you mean being "portrayed" then no I'm not offended (but I'm not Cajun, just grew up in South Louisiana). I think it just shows them as they are...hard working, good hearted folk, and a little under educated. Wouldn't want to piss 'em off though.

I'm one of these assholes who's got a complex about how Louisiana's people are portrayed on the national scale. I can't stand the term "coonass" and I do this:
Every time some hick from Michigan or Indiana makes fun of how "dumb and uneducated" we are.
But I have to say, I love the show "Swamp People." I think it protrays our traditional ways, everything from hunting and fishing down to the accents, positively and without judgement. It presents the people as they are, without demeaning narration or editing.
When you see the people as they are, you see hard-working, honest men who seem to be committed to their families and even their pets. They seem concerned about the safety of people in the area and the health of the environment. What's not to like?
In fact, through my 40 years of experiences in the swamp, I wish I knew more people like the ones portrayed in "Swamp People." I've personally run into far too many people on the water who are nothing like the capable, responsible people on the show.

Before the show first came on, i was disappointed, because i didn't want another show to make louisiana look bad. With True Blood, all the hurricane katrina shows, treme', the exterminator show, etc....
But i actually like this show and think it shows a pretty real depiction of some of our people. I grew up closer to the henderson area than new orleans, so i relate more with Troy than the others. I say relate, by that i mean, the older generation of my family were like him, and it makes me think about my great uncles, my dad, and my uncle.

I embrace it. Troy is the man The only one that looks ridiculous is Bruce.

agreed. Though, when i was kid, we'd go over to my maw maw's every saturday morning (i grew up in Livonia, LA), and before going there we'd stop by the little general store in town. They sold food, tools, rubber boots, fishing bait, ammo, etc... and it was also across from the police station. And that was the place where some of the people in town would stop by on their way back from a morning hunt to show off their kill. And i swear that i saw people in the coveralls, no shirt, with skull cap a few times.

I would have loved to grow up there.I grew up in North Alabama on the water.Had a 16 ft. flat bottom boat with a 8 HP Mercury outboard that had belonged to one of my Uncles.Hunted and Fished all I could. That would have been something else to have that much of an area to explore.

I agree.
I grew up in Venice, LA and I have seen some worse people there than what's on the show. For the most part, people there are similar to what's on the show though.

I sometimes feel that if these people weren't extreme coonasses and what the media/tv loves to portray Louisianians as, then they wouldn't even think to do this show.
They just love to portray this stereotype.
