Defensive ends Tyson Jackson and Glenn Dorsey are among the highest paid players at their position in football, and both have disappointed as pros. 2008 undrafted free agent Wallace Gilberry, meanwhile, looks ready to pass one of his highly paid teammates on the depth chart. Gilberry is set to make the minimum salary for the third straight year.

"Wallace is in a competition to try to be one of the guys in the front three in the 3-4 defense, and I think he can do that," Haley said Tuesday in one of his patented depth chart wake up calls.

Gilberry is "only" listed at 6-2, 268 pounds, which far lighter than ideal for a 3-4 defensive end. But Jackson has backed up an invisible rookie year with a worse training camp by most accounts. The No. 3 overall pick in the 2009 draft seems further away from helping the team than Dorsey, the No. 5 overall pick in the 2008 draft. It's unclear who Gilberry would replace.

The Chiefs would love it if two of their most highly paid players earned their money. But Haley needs to start finding any players on defense than can produce. Scholarships should have ended by now.

Some team that runs a 4-3 needs to rescue Dorsey.

This times 1000. Having him as a DE is beyond stupid.

Dorsey shouldn't count as a bust. Going from a penetrating DT to a read and react DE doesn't work too well.

Dorsey is a bust. Jackson is a bust. Jamarcus is a bust. Thats just the facts. Of course every school has busts, mainly the ones who put the most players in the league. Vernon Gholston is a bust etc etc.

You have to use someone even remotely correctly. Warren Sapp wouldn't have succeeded as a 3-4 DE in a read and react system.

Dorsey is a 4-3 DT not a 3-4 DE. Tyson was drafted way too high.

It's not always the system either. There are some teams who consistently have stellar defensive lines even with high turnover. Good defensive line coaches seem to be few and far between. Looks like KC just has a bad DL coach and a stupid head coach.

Utilize your players to the best of their abilities. Why draft players who clearly don't work in your system. Change systems or stop signing players who don't fit.

How about Ricky Jean-Francois playing NT for the 49ers. Went from
DE in a 4-3 to
DT in a 4-3 to
DE in a 3-4 to
NT in a 3-4

They drafted Dorsey when they ran a 43. I know coaches make a difference, but you can't coach a player whose biggest assets are speed and quickness to play a 34 DE. Richard Seymour is the def. of a 34 DE.

So Miles coached him up to the #3 pick in the NFL? or was it just because Saban recruited him?
