A small quick Dline can penetrate much better and get into the backfield and break the play up before it gets started. If we play a read and react Defense then were not so suited, need big bodies for that. But if Downs and Pep and Monty and the others can disrupt the play in the backfield the linebackers can come up and finish the play off and that will also cause turnovers. Its when you have a small line that doesn't try and penetrate you have the problem of big lineman wearing out smaller ones.

Adams was supposed to come in and play a lot, but I didn't think he'd end up starting.

Why not? Miles said at SEC Media Days that he'd play in every game if not start them. He's the biggest/fastest/most versatile DE we've got. He's fast enough to rush the passer and big enough to stop the run, which is perfect for a starter.

Dont know what is up with aghayere.

I doubt anything is up besides him just being probably the 5th best DE on the squad right now.

Maybe the best all around, but I'd take Mingo in a race.

The worrisome thing is that without Nevis they got run all over in the spring game. Thats the only real game action we've seen many of these guys in and it was not good

Since when does being a 255lb DE get you the label of "biggest DE".

IMO everybody is taking this lineman weight way to far.. The thing we have to create is alot more depth..

We don't need depth...just development. LSU is loaded on the dline with young, high potential guys. A good sign of their development is despite the logjam, we've had very little attrition.

Its obvious Chavis told all his dline to slim down. Everyone lost weight from last year. Even Edwards lost a ton of weight...

I think its a legit concern about stopping the run. LSU doesn't have big guys behind the dline either outside KS. Well, projected starters at least. Kinda hard to show that pass rushing ability if you never stop the run. A power team like Bama will be a problem. However, LSU has girth in their depth, so they can always plug them in. Our dline has both types of lineman in the depth, its almost like LSU is built for two different styles. Spread and Power. LSU has been hanging with Bama past two years because they can match their power...not many teams have been able to do that.

I'm kinda hoping we use bigger guys on earlier downs and then slip guys like Montgomery/Adams in the long down situations on third. But we'll see how good they are at stopping the run. They didn't look good in the spring game at all.

I'd probably take Mingo and Montgomery's speed and quickness over Ken Adams fwiw. Adams may be stronger against the run though and might be the best all around DE we have.

Depth > Weight

I'll take 4 280 lbers over 2 300 lbers. nearly any day.

I agree, but i hav seen multiple posts in threads about our dline being too small or our safties being under 200 or peterson being too heavy. is weight really that big of a deal? I have ben watching videos and pep looks fast for how big he is. peterson can lay the wood and is launching people in the air. nevis has intensity and eugene looks great. We have the weight they just arent the projected starters.
