And plus it was just an instinct move.

Doubt this.

Soccer players practice the instinct to reach for the ball out of their systems LONG before they reach this level.

I like how people think goaltending is flawless in basketball. What about when a person shoots it and someone goaltends the ball..but it wasn't going to go in!? Therefore, the team gets the points when they weren't going to make the points anyway but the defender fricked up.

Jesus absolutely NO sport has perfect rules, and soccer's rules are different than basketballs rules.

Does the person get ejected and suspended for a game for goaltending? Goaltenders in basketball should be ejected! I can make stupid arse suggestions too.

People make pks at about a 90% rate. That's almost a sure thing. I'm being ridiculous because everyone who thinks the goal should be given is ridiculous.

Yeah. It's completely ridiculous to think a shot three feet from entering goal should be counted if blocked illegally.

Nutso. I mean, what were the folks in basketball thinking!!!!

Well of course I would have. I think the RULE is ridiculous. I don't think the guy is ridiculous for taking advantage of the rule.

now see hendo's post. do you think the bball players should be kicked out for the rest of the game and for the next one for goaltending?

What I mean was it happened so fast. He didn't have time to really think it through. But he would have done the same thing anyway I'm sure.

Um. If in soccer, they scored 25 goals a game, ejection wouldn't be warranted.

This sport is godawful for a great many more reasons though. Guess this is just one more.

You can't make that a rule. There is too much to interprete. Where does the line start that you make it an automatic goal? Are you going to leave that up to a ref?

Or are you just going to say every hand ball in the box should count as a goal.

I understand the outrage over this handball. But there are reasons that this is the way it is.

Fwiw, I think that was one of the smartest plays I have seen in the world cup.

Every sport has stupid rules though. The two yellows in consecutive games in the World Cup=suspension in the next game is even worse considering how soft some of the yellows are.

I don't have a problem with what Suarez did at all, in fact I applaud him.

I'm just wondering why people keep comparing his hand ball on a ball flying into the net to someone getting fouled in basketball before a shot or receivers getting tackled while the ball is in the air. shite makes no sense.

Well, if you're asking me what rule I would make, I would make it "goaltending" for ANY shot that is ON GOAL and illegally blocked at a point beyond a given box(I'm sure the powers that be could figure this one out). I don't care if the fricking opposing goal keeper kicked the ball.

If the ball is on its way in and a NON goal keeper hands it, then it's goal.

Alas yes, I know. No one would ask me.

MLS has comparable (and rising) attendance numbers with NHL and NBA.

As a casual fan, this does not really bother me. It is an rule with consequences both good and bad. As someone said, the guy gets kicked out and the other team gets a penalty kick that is made the vast majority of the time. That keeps it from being overused early in games. (for those in the know: how often does this happen?). If the Ghana player makes his PK its a moot point.

On the other hand it has to be something that pisses you off very badly if you are a fan or member of the team this happens to.

To me this is not like those awful calls where the ball clearly went in and wasn't counted or where one guy didn't even touch the other guy but he flopped and the first guy was given a card.

So are you going to determine intent too? Or just every hand ball?

See, I understand your problem with the rule but when you think about it rationally it makes sense.
