Technically it is closed but I fished from some rocks on the back bay last week. Trout were going crazy and getting fat from lack of fishing. It is gonna be insane once they reopen it.

All of GI is closed.
Not sure if this is true.
My brother in law has a camp at Pirates Cove and he was down there this weekend. He told me they opened up a small area to fishing north of the island. He fished Bouy 13 Saturday and Sunday morning. He caught 17 trout on Saturday. I didn't get a report about Sunday yet.
He's a by-the-book guy and he would not have tryed to fish if it were closed. Call Sand Dollar & ask them for a fishing report.

I've been working down there for a month now. I'm not sure what the "official" status is on the fishing. However, on the weekends I do see some personal boats pulling in and putting into the water.
The guy at Bridgeside may let you put in, I know he can certainly use the business because all of the action is down at Nautical Point and Sand Dollar.

Don't get your hopes up of Grand Isle reopening for fishing for a long time. The feds informed local government this morning to expect a 32 mile long by 7 mile wide oil slick to hit Grand Isle to Terrebone Bay tomorrow night or latest Tuesday morning. This is the going to be the worst one yet for the old island. This is reportedly the real thick stuff too.

This new hit that is coming, assuming it doesn't hit west of Grand Isle will be interesting. Grand Isle has directional boom and skimmers in the passes. Hopefully it comes in during the daytime.
Twice in resent days areas on the western size of Baritaria bay have opened up. If no more oil comes in maybe more areas will be opening.
It was killing me laat weekend not being able to fish because I see see the fish were hitting and the birds were diving.

I was hoping to fish Cocodrie in 2 weeks...

I'm afraid this is the first of the big knockout punches guys. This is also a major underwater plume. They expect the oil because of the dispersants to go under the barges and barriers they set up. Cocodrie is probably in the line of fire in the next three days.

frick we were planning on going offshore out of cocodrie this weekend and loading up on some tuna

Just a question not an accusation but why do you now say this is an underwater plume. Your first post said it was "thick stuff".
And again just asking but it is my understanding that the underwater plumes that are any distance away from the leak are of the sort that you can not see the oil in the water. Just invisible to the eye droplets of dispersed oil. That they mostly keep track of by measuring the amount of Oxygen in the water down from the surface.

Leeville area has been opened all week and word is many did well on redfish.
Its going to be like this for sometime with various waves of oil and areas opening and closing.

I have noticed that they thick area on the latest projection maps is smaller than what has been showing. Maybe the collection of oil is starting to have an affect on the spill area we will see in the future. And the Helix produce will be coming online in a few days and then they will be able to collect all or almost all of the oil coming out.
Fingers crossed.

so far the biological impact has been minimal, only a few oyster beds have been impacted. However once a few animals come back positive there will be a cascading of closures.
They are gill netting closed areas daily to find contamination in fish.
So far we've been pretty good and lucky. Barataria looked great yesterday.

Our boats were out in this stuff 2 days ago and were skimming it up when the Coast Guard called up and told them to get out of the area because they were sending in the planes to spray dispersant on, it in order to thin it out some. They reported back to us that it is a large pocket of oil, but that it is and will be manageable. We'll be able to get it up!

It is Tuesday morning, any word on the current status?

I saw on the news that they had to move the barges out of the passes due to higher waves. So if any oil is approaching, it wont be good. If the barges can't stay in place, you know any booms would be useless.
That's why I don't understand why they won't let them put down the rock jetties to close most of the passes except for smaller openings to limit the area the oil can come in at, even if they make them pull them up later down the line when the cleanup is complete. And for the other reason I keep hearing from the CG, it may effect tidal flow by making the passes smaller. Well not many years ago those passes were a lot smaller than they are now.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but this massive section is both floating and underwater. Oil has been going underneath the barges at Grand Isle since yesterday and reports from folks in Terrebone bay that the oil has moved into the estuary. The higher than normal tides and south-south east winds they believe will push the oil further back into the marsh than at anytime before.
As for the rock jetty plan once you seal the pass off its fine but once you get high tides and oil then the oil is stuck in the marsh and can't retreat out.
