Don't think Chavis defense will ever be top 5 total defense

He had 2 defenses finish within the top 5 in total defense while at UT(2002 and 2008). But, really, the rankings are adjusted based on how other teams do.

It's probably better to focus on points allowed per game.

I say any team that finishes with a top 10 scoring defense has a legit shot at winning 10 games, in a 13 game (or 14) season IMO. LSU's scoring defense was 12th (?) last year.

False.

Chavis isn't capable of coaching stops against the current crop of SEC coaches.

While LSU's total defense was somewhat average last year, the scoring defense was quite adequate.

I'm just thinking hypothetical because it kind of worked the last two championships
Flynn was not "dink and dunk". He went deep many, many times, several of which saved our asses and won games for us. JJ will also not be able to 'dink and dunk' his way to a championship, SEC or NC. He must learn to throw the deep ball and use his talents and trust his receivers.

As for your Top 3 national defense hypothetical, this is not even a credible hypothetical, as we do not have the dominant d line to make our defense even top 20, much less top 3. We aren't going to win games solely because Patrick Peterson is an All American DB.

i don't think that jj can bring us anywhere near the SEC championship game no matter how good our defense is.

To quote Dr Lou -

You don't have to have the best in the country, just the best on the field. (insert slobbering sounds to taste).

and a hell of a running game.

The Defense could be top 25 if the running game is good enough to keep them off the field.

O-line and running game, and blocking by the FB are what I want to see. No short running game = losses.

False.

Not to mention, where do we get the Top 3 defense?

If our 0 can run the ball & convert on 3rd down=we can make our D much better. I'm just not so sure that JJ should be our starting QB. I hope that he can perform better than he did last year (or the spring game for that matter)

True. LSU can't possibly have a running game worst than last years. The defense will get more time on the bench, and one of the quarter backs will barely hold the offense up for 9-11 games

Firm scoring defense and a solid running game are all that is needed for a 10 win season.

agreed. you don't necessarily need a top 3 overall defense...just a very good scoring defense.

Yes see Florida 2006....

They hit you with a quick read and their atheletes beat you with the speed and good down field blocking!

yeah, I impressed with the scoring D of last season, considering how awful the offense was. I would imagine if the offense had been able to control the ball better, it would have been more impressive. Overall the defense needs to improve but the name of the game is points allowed and points scored. Defense did their part last year.

I would like to see a better Time of Possession though. Although, that may have had more to do with the offenses inablility to maintain drives. That defense had to be dog tired by the end of the 3rd in most games last year.

Defense had their part to play in that as well. LSU's defense was average in 3rd down conversions allowed. Of course, it LSU's offense didn't think the first down marker was a stop sign, the defense wouldn't have been on the field as much.
Lots of room to improve, but in points allowed, I am totally fine with the defensive production.

The problem is that JJ isn't accurate enough to put passes in a position for our athletes to make plays after the catch, even on short passes.
