I grew up in Columbia, MO. The Tigers were named after the nickname the residents received for uniting and fighting AGAINST Bloody Bill Anderson. Missouri was taken out of the war after Wilson's Creek. As to the media attention, I wouldn't count on it. MU is no NE or LSU or AR. They don't dominate the spotlight in their own state. People in St. Louis are as likely(if not more) to support IL. In KC, they are more likely to cheer for KU. SW MO roots for either MSU or AR. Even in central MO, the support for MU is tepid at best. When football improved, support increased. If football starts losing, those fans will disappear. MU has never won a national title in ANY sport in its very long history. In the 1980's their head football coach was collecting DWIs and nobody blamed him. Invite MU to the SEC if you want, but you won't gain statewide media/support and you won't gain a champion in ANY sport.

Single post bandit you suck. Born in SE MO, went to MU for two years, and have lived in central MO for 10.

MU is the only FBS school in the state and there is widespread support for MU! Stop your texass trolling.

Look I get. Missouri doesn't seem south enough to most SEC people. But having grown up in Missouri all my life and having gotten to know my wife's family from the BR, we are not all that different. We both love our football teams, we both like to hunt, and we love our BBQ. Mizzou recruits heavy from Texas (I know maybe not a true southern state) for football and heavy from the south east states for basketball. But lets face the music, the geography and the culture match isn't as important anymore, it is about TV revenue. Look at what the PAC10 is doing. You think they added Colorado because they fit the culture or they are a good competitive football program, no they added them for their 16th ranked TV market with 1.5 million households. Missouri has 2 good sized passionate TV markets in STL and KC and that means big $$ for the SEC. It's also probably not well know that Mizzou has shown in the past 5 years they can compete with SEC schools.
Missouri's most recent football games vs. the SEC:
05 vs. South Carolina WON 38-31
06 MISSISSIPPI WON 34-7
07 at Mississippi WON 38-25
08 Arkansas WON 38-7 (Cotton Bowl win Vs. McFadden & Felix Jones)

Granted not powerhouse SEC schools but not bottom of the barrel either. Mizzou with Texas A&M (Houston and part of the Dallas Market) to the SEC seems like a big win for everyone.

Scoreboard, dude.

Kansas 1
Mizzou 0

Losers are always on the losing side. Stupid losers can't even get over it in 150 years. But we'll be reunited in the Big-10/16 shortly. Mizzou will be the first representative from a former slave state.

You say MU has widespread support in MO. I recall going to the Independence Mall where they had KU monopoly and MU monopoly. I comically observed as numerous passerbys asked where MU was. Even in MO, there are people who don't know where MU is. My parents read the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, even they(paper) have noted through the decades that top-talent from St. Louis is MORE likely to go to Illinois than MU. Hazelwood Schools, Lee Summit and even Columbia-Hickman are more likely to leave state than go to MU. Don't confuse personal loyalty to any type of statewide support. People see Cornhusker, they think Nebraska. They see Bengal Tiger(purple&yellow), they think Louisiana. They see Razorback, they think Arkansas. They see a black and gold Tiger they think of the local high school mascot. KOLR10 out of Springfield spends equal amount of time on MSU/MU/AR.

LOl I read it all but like another poster I should have stopped. Your made up parents that haven't heard of Mizzou should move to Disney.

Hehe. They still live in central MO. They watch KOMU. Eat at Shakespeare's Pizza. I was just up there a couple of weeks ago. I'm a Hickman alumnus. Then again, you already knew that. Rather than deal with the facts I presented, you're trying an ad hominem attack instead.

Missouri in the SEC reminds me of Kentucky...They don't quite fit; but it works..

How so? I see them fitting SEC better than Big Ten.

Personal opinion I guess..Kentucky is the only team in the SEC that I really don't get pumped up about playing in football..not sure why.

I'm kind of glad The Big10 is turning their backs on Mizzou. I was never a fan of them joining the conference(for any reason other than getting a CCG).

I'd like Mizzou, if ND won't join.

MU is a good choice. KC, St. Louis, Springfield combined have a larger population than the entire state of Mississippi or possible Ark.

This whole realignment thing is about $$$, not athletic competition or academics.

If the PAC 10 and Big 10 are going to 16, the SEC should too. MU would bring a nice TV mkt.

KU doesn't have the TV market MU does. MU is on the same lattitude as Kentucky and like Kentucky was a border state during the civil war.

Lattitude of St. Louis 38N38
Louiville 38N15

I think NC and VT/Ga Tech would make good additions.

These would be my 4 additions to the SEC
All have large markets.

A&M
MU/Clemson
NC/Fl State
VT/Ga Tech

Mizzou should be the backup plan behind at least 5 schools.

Being that I live about 20 minutes from Kansas City and Lawrence,I wouldn't mind Kansas and Mizzou joining the SEC. It would just mean that i would get more opportunities to see LSU kick some butt.

In football that is.

Civil war MO was largely southern.....that has changed radically since then. After living in KC for 4 years now, the bootheel area of MO would be the only portion I would consider southern. These folks consider themselves midwestern to the core after 100+ years of "ethnic cleansing". To be honest, NW Arkansas seems way more midwestern than Southern. KC.
