I'm quoting this from Bernie at the STL PostDispatch, I couldn't have said it better so here you go:
"if Missouri was to blame for causing all of this turmoil simply by trying to canoodle with the Big Ten, then shouldn’t the Tigers receive some credit for the end result — a huge increase in TV dollars for everyone in the conference? Nebraska, trying to justify its leap to the Big Ten, used a preposterous and transparent “Missouri Made Us Do It” defense. The NU logic: because Mizzou made eyes at another woman, Nebraska was somehow forced to end its own marriage. Right. And the Nebraska defection played into the Texas plan for a complete Big 12 takeover. And by finalizing its takeover of the Big 12, Texas got a lot more money for itself, and a lot more money for everyone else, too. So if we are supposed to believe that Missouri’s restlessness set off a panic, then we also have to say that Missouri set off a sequence of events that led to a nice, fat payday for all of the boys in the Big 12. Sorry, but the B12 haters who are dumping on Mizzou can’t have it both ways."
If the Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe would have looked out for schools that did not have Texas in their name or a burnt orange team color with a longhorn mascot, none of this talk would be going on now.
It was the BigTen who leaked which schools they were interested in. Yes Mizzou flirted a little but so did NU and it was NU that pursued this officially with a Big Ten application and Texas who was originally asking for Big 12 loyalty pledges from the other schools only they are the ones ready to bolt to the PAC10 next week. Texas is chasing fresh money and somehow that is Mizzou's fault. It is all very laughable.
I just hope KU and Mizzou end up at a major power conference (not MWC) Between the Pac10, SEC, BigTen or Big East. You can't tell me that KU and Mizzou are not one of the top 64 athletic programs in the country (assuming these conferences eventually go to 16 teams)
It seems to me the most of the Mizzou haters on this board are KU fans. I love when people say "Mizzou is a bunch or whiners because they don't like their bowl selections" as if our gripes are ridiculous but if you recall in 2007 Mizzou was 1 win away from playing for a national championship, had a number 1 ranking, a big 12 north title, and they ended up giving the orange bowl to KU. Yes Mizzou got blown out by 21 points on national TV for the Big 12 title and it is Mizzou who came out flat on nobody's fault but their own. But really, Kansas gets the orange bowl who Mizzou beat up on just 2 weeks prior. So yes we were a little taken by surprise with the Cotton Bowl selection but we quickly moved on and in that game just ended up destroying that Arkansas (Mcfadden and Jones) team by 31 points, that same Arkansas team which beat the soon to be National Champions LSU. So please excuse Mizzou for being "whiners".

Look I get. Missouri doesn't seem south enough to most SEC people. But having grown up in Missouri all my life and having gotten to know my wife's family from the BR, we are not all that different. We both love our football teams, we both like to hunt, and we love our BBQ. Mizzou recruits heavy from Texas (I know maybe not a true southern state) for football and heavy from the south east states for basketball. But lets face the music, the geography and the culture match isn't as important anymore, it is about TV revenue. Look at what the PAC10 is doing. You think they added Colorado because they fit the culture or they are a good competitive football program, no they added them for their 16th ranked TV market with 1.5 million households. Missouri has 2 good sized passionate TV markets in STL and KC and that means big $$ for the SEC. It's also probably not well know that Mizzou has shown in the past 5 years they can compete with SEC schools.
Missouri's most recent football games vs. the SEC:
05 vs. South Carolina WON 38-31
06 MISSISSIPPI WON 34-7
07 at Mississippi WON 38-25
08 Arkansas WON 38-7 (Cotton Bowl win Vs. McFadden & Felix Jones)

Granted not powerhouse SEC schools but not bottom of the barrel either. Mizzou with Texas A&M (Houston and part of the Dallas Market) to the SEC seems like a big win for everyone.
Having recently married into a LSU/SEC family I can certainly appreciate some of these points against having Mizzou in the SEC but here are a few points on why Mizzou would fit in great with the SEC. I know Mizzou has had some terrible years in the 80s and 90s but the last ten years they have invested money and resources into football and they are now once again a winning football program. In the past 5 years Mizzou has played and beat SEC teams 4 times. Mizzou has a large TV market between STL(21), KC(32), and to a lesser extent Springfield(74). Basketball is well above average and Mike Anderson still recruits heavy in the south east states. Missouri borders 3 SEC states and we would travel nicely to Tennessee, Kentucky, and Arkansas, and having traveled to the BR several times I can say that is a doable trip as well. I don't know which conference Mizzou will land but I think Texas A&M and Mizzou would be great for the SEC.
