Best Atlantic Ocean Beach Options?

It is looking like my plans for Gulf Shores in July will be nixed due to this oil disaster.
What are some of the better Atlantic Ocean beach options for someone in BR?
I'm looking one of the shorter drives, but also want to consider quality.

I saw some footage of a beach in NC that was very similar to Gulf Shores. It surprised me b/c east coast beaches typically suck compared to the panhandle area.

Yes, I've been to Daytona Beach. The beach wasn't very impressive.

As a relocated North Carolinian, from the bayou, I will let you know that the beaches do not suck in North Carolina. We do not have the white sandy beaches that the gulf does, but the beaches are clean and lots of eye candy. Really good fishing, and lots of families. If you want to have fun in the sun, NC beaches are good.

Myrtle Beach is overrated

Not to hijack your thread, but how bad will it be? We wanted to go on a short trip to GS or Destin but with all of this it looks like we won't..
Even if you schedule a trip to that area, how bad is it? Are the beaches closed or anything like that?

Kiawah Island, SC. Best beach on the east coast. Many think it's the best beach in the continental U.S. A 45 minute drive from downtown Charleston. Here's one photo. Another is my sig photo.

St. Augustine Florida. Appx 600 miles. Long 1 day drive, mostly 1-10. Nice beach and one of the most interesting towns in Florida.

get a boat and stay in the intracoastal in OB or the harbor, crab island and instacoastal in Destin....that is if they keep it out the pass.

Atlantic beach in NC is great. From there up to the outer banks area. Not as commercial as myrtle beach. Layed back and great small beach towns.

+1
My family been going there for many years as well. Not a place to go if you're looking for college kids partying, more of an older group. Great for families.

St. Simon's is low key and laid back. It is not, like all Atlantic beaches above Miami, blue water and white sands though. We usually stay at North Breakers or the beach club. King and Prince or Sea Island (G8 summit a few years ago) are the nicest resorts but pricey. Warning...Sea Palms resort is not on the beach, or even close.
