Even if they had to spend a billion with the clean up effort, that isnt even 10% of BP's yearly net income.

Its going to be much more than a billion. The familys lawsuits and the lawsuit against BP for calling off the feds and other agencies in the beginning comes close to a billion

Lawsuits are going to be huge. Much greater than the spill fix/clean up cost.
Of course they will appeal and fight the awards for the next 10-15 years.

yep by the time the appeals process is done, it will be a lot less than you think. The US Court system needs to make an example of this company and do what is right by the American people and take care of them.

What's your point?
I figure this will cost BP about 7-8 billion in total expense. Definitely enough to put a kink in the numbers, but nowhere near bankrupting the company.

How long after the Valdez did Exxon merge (FYI, it was a Hostil Takeover) with Mobil? Money is no problem.

I didn't know that. I'm pretty young, so it was before I was paying attention to anything in the news, but that has to have been one of the biggest hostile takeovers in history, right?

Whether you have it or not. Money is ALWAYS a problem. In fact, some would suggest, "mo money, mo problems". However, I agree with what you are getting at. This will probably be a "mo money, mo problems" kind of situation. The punitive damages are going to be insane because:
1) BP can "afford" it
2) The country is retarded and wanted to tax away profits when gas was high, but couldn't constitutionally do so (I hope). This will be a whipping boy even that will let them put the screws to big oil.

Unless I am mistaken, BP is only responsible for ~75 million of that.
