are pissed. last year they sold half of their catch for cash. now, they are bringing their w2 forms to bp and only getting paid what's on the form.
that's why everyone is enraged.

Maybe they shouldn't have been tax cheaters.
I know it sucks, but it's their own fault.

At this point that's about one of the only things that's not BP's fault

How about the tax cheating fricks pay the IRS, then they might have a right to bitch.

I assume they only used their fire, police, public education, and national defense half time as well. They should also be satisfied with a half speed response by the govt. to the oil spill.

I figured it was only a matter of time before this came to light. Pretty much all the trawlers I know sell what they can for cash then unload the rest at the platform. The bulk of their income is cash.

My Dad and my grandfather shrimp for a living. This was something that was passed down from their parents and even before them. I am positive that they are more pissed off about their way of life being jeopardardized than the money. Hell most of these shrimpers would rather work cleaning it up than contact someone about a lawsuit. About the cash thing. Yes most of these fisherman sell whatever they can for cash because that is the only way they can survive. In 2000 80/100 count shrimp sold for about $1.00/lb. Today they are selling for $.50. I'm sure you can do the math with the price of inflation(cost of living, gas/diesel, cost of supplies/nets, and groceries)that making half less than you made 10 years ago can be tough. These people have to adapt to feed their families because its all they know. Sometimes my mind judges them for how stupid I think they are for staying in the business because I have a bachelors degree in business. It still doesn't change the fact that they have been doing this for 30+ years. Its in their blood. I do understand that there are going to be some bad eggs that gripe about not getting what they made last year because they sold most for cash. Those guys are the few that are not trying to get BP contracts to try and save our coast. These people are similiar to some Katrina victims that worked the system. The majority of the people from the bayou areas are good, honest, hardworking people that would rather be on the water shrimping than worrying about how many years its going to be before they have another shrimp season.
Just keep in mind that money is an issue but its not the big issue.

Commercial fishermen and farmers are of the same ilk, IMO.

I am a little shocked at the reaction of this topic. These are local fisherman. cash is a way of life. I would do the same thing. Look at the wonderful help they get from our govt. and you want them to be honest on there taxes. do you think your boss or company is honest about his taxes.

Uhh, I hope so, and if they aren't they should be held accountable.

I would assume the same goes on in the charter business. When you're running trips @ $1,200/day and overnighters @ $2,400 a pop for weeks on end without a day off there is undoubtedly some money that goes straight into the pockets. Ive only come across two charter captains that actually provided an organized receipt for their trips. Good business organization is gonna pay big dividends for these guys.

What happened to the rumor that every guy with a commercial fishing license will get paid $1200/day? From LA coast to FL coast. Is this exactly that...a rumor? Hadn't heard about the W2

BP should just use the Honor System. Surely no self respecting fisherman would over-inflate his income, would he?

BP has zero Honor and has done more media spinning and talking out of both sides of their mouth for this philosophy to pan out. Regardless of our opinions on the fisherman's accounting practices they are still the victim of a crime that is going to reach Global proportions. That's not exaggerating.

Why should anyone have any sympathy for tax cheats? They did what they did and it bit them in the arse. Maybe all the avoided taxes they didn't pay is evening out a little with this spill.

It could be worst. They could be drinking beer on the side of the road or living off the government. There are tons of people that hide cash if they can. Uncle sam is taxing the working class to death.
Bar owners, commercial fisherman, convient stores, handy man, and many many other jobs operate on cash.
There are way worse leaches in the world that most of these working class citizens.
