"I'd flown up to Green Bay and had a terrific interview with the Packers," Payton wrote. "That's a great organization - a team I had followed since I was a kid. I felt optimistic about that possibility and was expecting to hear something soon."

"I really thought there was a good chance I was getting the Packers' job," Payton wrote. "Without a doubt, Green Bay is where I wanted to go. Knowing the tradition. Coming from the Midwest. Growing up around all that. And Beth too - I knew she could see herself in Green Bay, despite those winters that never end."

While Payton was in New Orleans in January 2006 to meet with Saints general manager Mickey Loomis, he kept checking his cell phone to see if 920, the Green Bay area code, was attached to a text or voice mail.

After talking to Saints officials, including owner Tom Benson, Payton was relaxing in his room at the Renaissance Hotel, which was still open after Hurricane Katrina, before going out to dinner at Tommy's Cuisine.

"I took off my coat and loosened my tie," Payton wrote. "I was relaxing on the bed, almost dozing off. The cell phone began to vibrate. I had a message from 920, Ted Thompson, the Packers GM. Ted got right to the point. 'Hey,' he said, 'the process has gone well. We've decided to go in a different direction, and I wanted to let you know as soon as possible. It hasn't come out yet. Please don't say anything until we announce it.'

"I wanted to cry," Payton wrote. "I appreciated the heads-up. But damn!"

The different direction Thompson was talking about was Mike McCarthy, who was named Packers head coach on Jan. 12, 2006. LINK

I mean can you blame the guy? GB's tradition and stability at the time with Favre, him being from the area, and the what seemed to be impossible rebuilding job in NOLA. At least this solidifies that the Saints have a smart coach. That being said, I'm sure he prefers how things have turned out.

Hopefully, now he doesn't want to go anywhere else. I wouldn't put it past Jerry Jones to come after him if/when the Cowboys fire Phillips.

They can't operate like that in the NFL. In college they can do pretty much anything they want, but in the pros there are rules with major penalties if they contact a head coach under contract.

from a unbiased nonhomer point of view, i cant blame him.... green bay has great history and is a great gig... but now i know for a fact there is no where else sp would like to be now... he and his family are really happy here, and he's got the best qb in the league directing his offense

this. I can't see either him or Brees leaving as long as the other is still a Saint.

Just ignore him. I get frustrated at times with SFP, but at the end of the day he's an actual fan unlike El Trollo

Brees is on a mission. He's not the kind of guy who goes where things are easy; he's the kind of guy who goes where he feels he's most needed. He'll retire a Saint.

I don't think any coach in the NFL, if given a choice, would take the N.O. job over the GB job period (maybe not now of course). The fact that is was right after Katrina made it even more of a no brainer. Thank you GB.
