Whoever asked about compliance to OSHA specs:

OSHA has nothing to do with any of this equipment.

It's funny reading these boards about the oilfield from people who know absolutely nothing about it. A subsea stack is about 55' tall and weighs around 750,000 pounds.

Thanks for your insight on the situation. My background is from the chemical industry where we have to minimize the potential of releasing toxic chemicals to communities where thousands of people could be killed.

My point here is that the BOP does seem to have redundancy, but that isn't good enough. There needs to be diverse (different technology) redundancy. Failure in this critical application in not an option!

The chemical industry really has increased its focus on safety in the past few years primarily due to the BP incident in Texas City in 2005. The Baker Panel report includes recommendations for sites developing Process Safety Metrics both leading / lagging to identify scenarios and track key process safety indicators.

The oil industry needs to be more proactive with safety. There is always room for improvement no matter how good we think we are. It is almost two different worlds oilfield / chem industry but it seems that we can learn from both sides. There probably should be a common federal agency for both, much like the CSB.

It was on it's way to a scrap yard when it fell so it obviously wasn't drilling and therefore unable to leak oil. You are a fricking idiot.

Chill out man, gosh I was just linking to a story....

Not saying the oil industry is unsafe. Inherently it is a risky business and we have to do everything we can to minimize the risks. Behavior based safety has probably improved leaps and bounds from 10 - 20 years ago through training, awareness, safety meetings, etc.

The Deepwater Horizon may appear to be more of a design safety issue due to common failure mode.

There is always room for improvement:

The oil industry is very proactive when it comes to safety.

When will the oil dispersement chemicals will go online at the wellhead?

Does anyone know how much oil slick that is coming onshore around Venice?

TigerDog83, this interviewed guy was verified that he was a pet eng on the rig ... it's in the first section of the interview.

Synopsis:

Man it's hard hearing him talk about the 11 guys going in the bomb as he called it referring to the blast.

Part 2 saying that the rig and had received the highest award for safety and environmental concern from MMS.

This guy says he got to a lifeboat and that 5 to 7 jumped ... the rest got to a lifeboat. Large vessel was real close by. That boat disconnected unhooked the hose and moved about a mile away. 45 min - 1 hour for CG to arrive .. pretty fast for 45 miles offshore.

Levin asking about the lawyer/legal situation .. survivor saying everything other than containment is kneejerk reaction. Lives are being risked to fix this ... can't be too in a hurry ... have to be cautious.

Rig in service since 2001 ... survivor says NO SENSE in shutting down every rig in the Gulf. From HIS position .. you can't win against Mother Nature. BOP tests are mandated and conducted like clockwork. Failed test .. work stops .. problem gets corrected, reconnect, retest, etc.

"Harrowing experience is putting it mildly" per survivor. He called in b/c he heard a caller say "possible terrorism" and he wanted to encourage focus on 11 fellow workers that died and survivors.

Not really sure to tell you the truth. He's an IT guy with them doing something right now in their Ville Platte location .. some other offices/divisions are combining with theirs and I just know that he's been working his arse off.

SO, do you REALLY think that this thing is close to being shut off from your sources? I'm getting pretty freaked out and I'm not sure why. This is just HUGE ... the loss of life was enough but this just can so greatly affect EVERYTHING ... for EVERYONE.

Took these about 30 minutes ago at Breton Sound 21. Not to state the obvious, but the oil is light brown. Sorry for the picture quality.
