Some draft picks below under Payton:

Tracy Porter
Sed Ellis
malcom jenkins
roman harper
thomas morestead
carl nicks
jahri evans

robert meachem

so i pose a question; Would you rather have immediate impact players like the large list above

or wait one or 2 years for a guy like the Saints have done with Robert Meachem???

I keep hearing people say "the Saints want BPA, its the only way to go".....but under Payton, and his excellent talent evaluators, they have done their best work drafting for need.

I am in no way bashing the talent of the players drafted. They seem like they have a lot of upside.

I am just questioning the strategy. People are saying there were no good defensive players available, which just isnt true. With as good as we evaluate players, there had to be players that that were away from the obvious.

We have holes at LB and DT. Wouldnt we have been better served to draft some players there to compete early on? Yes, we got Al Woods, i understand. He wasnt my favorite player at LSU, but he does have some upside. So we'll see.

just my little rant. I dont really like this draft. I may love it in 3 years, but right now I dont think it is what is best for our team.

I've maintained all along that I wanted to address the DT issue with the draft (don't love the Woods pick but they know more than I do) and that I want to address with OLB issue in free agency. It seems like the front office agrees with me (I don't buy the talk about addressing the OLB position from within but I could be wrong).

I think that maybe they think they are ok with what they have now to make another run. This is more towards looking to the future, and depth in some positions. And BPA. The question would be are they correct that they are ok with what they have now. These moves may pay off in a few years.

Here we go...

If you disagree with a move, you must be good enough to replace Loomis

Did you know on draft day that Porter, Harper, Morestead, Nicks, and Evans would turn out to be as good as they are?

There is so much speculation involved that you have to take the players that represent the best value on the board. I bet that with the exception of Robinson, that is exactly how the Saints drafted. I wouldn't be surprised if all of our picks so far contribute, barring injury, in some way this year.

Good teams don't reach for need. I don't think any of the players you listed were considered reaches for where they were drafted. If they were considered reaches at the time, it's only because the draft "gurus" clearly didn't know as much about them as the Saints FO.

These guys were all drafted at positions where there were holes

how good they would be didn't matter at the time. all that mattered was we were addressing needs

We really didn't have any "needs" that couldn't be fixed through free agency

Nicks wasn't a need pick, we already had an established starter in Nesbit and people were upset about the pick for that very reason

...and it's not like they wanted to wait two years on Meachem's knee. You can fault them that sure, but losing that time due to injury wasn't really part of the plan.

i was tryin to bring up a lot of these last night before i went out

we draft for need and we draft raw athletes. that is what this front office under SP likes to do

and we trade up for guys. if you trade up, that's drafting for a need almost always

it's funny that you bring up porter, evans, and nicks, as they are starters above guys we drafted this year

Sed Ellis was definitely a need, and we traded up to get him. Then Porter in the 2nd after the Jason David experiment

no, but its obvious these players were drafted strictly for need.

value+need

we are talking 2nd and 3rd round picks in a DEEP draft. Value is there regardless.

they just did straight up BPA.
