ESPN on LaFell

What he brings: LaFell has some of the biggest upside in this year's receiving class. He has great size and does a good job using his body to shield defenders from the ball. The problem for LaFell is that he needs refining with his route running and he must catch the ball more consistently at the next level.
Refine his route running? Dude was open damn near every play!

open in college, doesn't mean open in NFL!!

He had 4 years and an indoor practice facility to refine his route running.
I don't see how if a kid is motivated and wants to excel, he does not have route running down before he leaves college
Of course this requires good instruction from coaches.
Maybe Billy G. Will handle this going forward.

he did what his coach required of him. our former WR coach wasn't exactly great at coaching technique

Well then, I guess 99.9% of WRs who go to the NFL lacking coaching.
That is the issue with every single WR going to the draft and is one reason they have the some of the highest bust % in the first round.
Lafell's route-running is better than most going into the draft I bet. He was good at times but you could see him getting lazy on some routes. He certainly was better than TT who was probably twice as lazy running routes.

Granted, I don't know much about the intricacies of route running, but I can't imagine you can be bad at it and still get the kind of separation he did. He got Dwayne Bowe and Josh Reed open.

Hes not bad at running routes, he just needs a little refining...like every other WR going to the NFL.

Don't equate "lazy" for "reality". JJ couldn't hit him.

doesn't always = good route running

that is a poor analysis. probably one of the most precise route runners in the SEC in the last decade. very good at creating seperation. what jumps out on film is his first step when he cuts and you can also see it after a catch. he'll create space to gain another 15-20 yards off of that explosive first step in and out of cuts. think he was picked in the right spot though.

During the live pick Kyper said "didn't have a QB to get him the ball at LSU"

LSU's routes this season were fairly simple. I can imagine he needs work on route running. Usually involved finding the open spot and stopping.
