How could you define announcing skills?
a good start: knowing the basic rules of the game of baseball, and then when corrected not to act like a lil child and continue to argue the point when you're obviously wrong

ok, so all of those posts about him today just randomly occurred for no specific precipitating event...no media release, no announcement of retirement, no specific notable blunder on a recent broadcast
it was simply a random rant phenomenon (RRP) that resulted in others randomly ranting, ad infinitum
ok, thanks all

I'm pretty sure he knows the basic rules brah. Everyone makes mistakes.

no, the shite hit the fan last night during the Wally Classic, to the point where multiple threads were started independantly of one another complaining about his ever increasingly negative attitude/bonehead mistakes while calling the game

guess you missed the game last wknd where he argued Charlie for 10 minutes that the UGA run should have counted even though we clearly made the out at 3rd base before the run crossed the plate (bc it was not a force or some shite)

John Ferguson will always be the real 'Voice of the Tigers "... nobody will do Tiger football better.

I think everybody seemed to get upset after the Shortstop for Southern Miss came in and struck out a batter and went 0-2 before the game winning hit on the next batter.
If that is the case, what would you guys who are bashing him rather him have done? Should he just announce that they struckout without some sense of disgust that our players last night could not hit a position player with zero collegiate pitching experience? I would imagine that when that happened last night most true tiger fans were pretty irritated and I like the fact that we have an announcer that lives and dies with every game, including a weeknight game.
I'll agree that lately in the last two years Jim has gotten a little more down when doing some of the games. But lets be honest, who of us wasn't a bit upset the last two years watching the LSU football team. And who wouldn't have gotten a little jaded when watching our basketball team start out 0-14 in the SEC this year. I appreciate Hawthorne for being a true fan and bringing that enthusiasm to the microphone.
I do, like everybody else, sometimes get upset when he makes mistakes on the technical aspects of the announcing and I wish that was something that he could fix. But at the same time, you can't have everything and I'd rather a die hard tiger fan on the radio who occasionally messes up than somebody that sits there stoically.

I never get to hear him anymore (thanks, Bertman), but during the years that I did, I always thought he did a good job.
If he was from South Louisiana and talked like Justin Wilson, most of you coonasses would probably love him....lol

love him also, but it sure was aggravating when the player was in the end zone, and he was still saying..."He's at the 20, 15, 10, 5...touchdown!". That used to drive me and my Dad nuts! (and it was not the sound/radio delay)

Those may not be the same thing, fwiw. I remember people complaining about John Ferguson. Then when he left, people talked about how great he was as an announcer.
Hawthorne will be called the best LSU announcer in history.....not long after he moves on.
For the record, I loved Ferguson. I grew up listening to him and never missed a game.
Hawthorne will never be called the best LSU announcer in history (by me at least). I've listened to a lot of sports radio, and he's one of the worst I've heard. He gets facts wrong, he doesn't let the color guy do his job, he doesn't give the score, he's negative, he anticipates the call before it's made (many times wrong) and he constantly criticizes the officials, referees. I do think he has a good voice, but I think LSU can do better.

I hope to be calling him the best LSU announcer in history REAL SOON!!!

THE MAN is doing his JOB beautifully!!!! He is keeping the RANT stirred up, giving people post, after post, after post to either defend or defame him....LOL He is wonderfully animated with his calls.....I see in color when he announces...NO BLACK AND WHITE for me!!! I guess it's all in how in HEAR IT.....do you hear the glass is half empty OR do you hear it is HALF FULL!!! I hear the FULLNESS of the game, enjoy it and will continue to listen to the VOICE OF LSU!!!!

It drives me nuts when he switches w/ Charlie during the middle innings and then tries to do color while he's eating. Shouldn't that be rule #1 for an announcer?, don't eat on the air.

First off I like Hawthorne and don't want to see him go but I would like it if he killed the doom and gloom act. He is the ultimate negatiger and all he does is add fuel to the fire of other negatigers. He is a good announcer, but I would like to see less of the "We have no hope. The sky is falling." Chicken little act.
