Not so stupid. Quality backup QB's are a valuable commodity. Also could put Saints in an enviable position for draft day trade of last pick in 1st round to drop down a few spots and gain additional draft picks. Teams with QB needs might be anxious to drat McCoy early at the end of the 1st day to get a leg up on Round 2 McCoy pursuers.

Your scenario rests on the concept of some team trading to get McCoy...which makes sense.
McShay is saying that "McCoy would appeal to the Saints". That means the Saints would have to use the first pick to get him. No one has said McCoy will last until the 64th pick.
Do you think we pick him at 32? I don't.

adono has the reasoning right. McCoy definitely not at #32 and definitely gone before #64. I'll just chime in to say I rate McShay as very bad of all the draftniks. He's just a pretty boy talking head that tries to stir reaction. Kiper wasn't an all star but his heir apparent is another step in Disney's continued downgrade of espn from sports to entertainment. It's the TMZ of sports. Watch it only when all else fails.

Not at 32, but if the Saints did trade # 32 to drop down and gain picks, I would grab him in the 2nd round in the 40-50 range.

There is no way in hell that we use our first pick on a QB...absolutely no way. We have serious needs on defense and Payton will not piss Williams off by picking a potential backup QB over defensive help.

And you think McCoy changes that fact?
If it was a major concern for the FO, they'd be in the McNabb chase. Now that would erase that concern and it could be done for a first rounder.

It's a season write off if he goes down seriously- regardless of who is behind him. Not worth 1st-3rd Rd investment money when you are contending and trying to repeat. A later round project would be reasonable moneywise and according to need. Go Skelton/Snead at #130. Brady or Matt Cassel were neither thought of as hot prospects but both thrived in the right system when given the opportunity.

I tend to disagree with you, Meat. While QB isn't a "need", it is a position that we can't wait too much longer to address. I'm in the draft a QB in the 2nd/3rd camp, because we do need someone to develop behind Brees (and someone good) for when the inevitable does happen.
I love the GB model. They had Hasselback on the team for a while, but Favre kept on rolling. So they traded him and got a 1st. Next up they drafted Rodgers, and he stayed for a while until Favre (ughem) retired.
The point is that they always had a top notch backup, and even though he never was used, they always recieved something for him.
Drew isn't young, and this is the time when you look to have your plan B always in the stable.

He ain't exactly QB old at 31 though. Even though not big he is quite an athlete and works tirelessly to stay in shape. I call 36 and early out for him. Push 40 if the O-line continues to protect him as well as it has. So, the next guy in line ala Rodgers I think is premature. Go developmental like Cassel.

And before that, they developed Aaron Brooks and then traded him to us. [insert evil laugh]
We don't need a QB to replace Drew if he goes down for the season. What we do need is a quality backup who could fill in reasonably well if twists an ankle or sprains a knee and has to miss a few games. Put me in the "after the 3rd round" camp on this one.

Why doesnt anybody believe Chase Daniel could be good one day? Am I missing something? He seems pretty promising to me. Maybe Im wrong

I am not saying Drew is old. I think he can play till 40. However, you can't afford to take chances with that. Once you are post 30, the body doesn't heal as well or take punishment the way it did pre 30. I think regardless of whether or not Drew is playing till 34 or 40, this is the time in which you have a quality backup that is there as a just in case. If Drew is still playing well once this backup's rookie contract is in its final year, then you trade him, ala GB and NE. Using the draft to both solidify depth of your team as well as setup yourself for future drafts is a good policy imo.
