So is Tulane really building a new stadium?

Any internet links that actually detail this?

I doubt it. The school has officially denied the reports. The Tulane boards seem to think that it is going to happen in some form, maybe not exactly what was intially described, and that the school is just waiting on final approval before having a press conference. I'm highly skeptical

Tulane could easily be dropped out of Div I soon AND it is having serious financial problems in the A.D. There is no way in hell that they will get a new stadium.

I just don't understand how they could afford it
Maybe if some wealthy benefactor footed all of the bill... but they were seriously hurt by Katrina and had to close down some departments even
In light of that it would be a big wtf to me if they chunked down 100 million dollars towards athletic programs. With fairly little fan support (even with new facilities will still likely continue to bleed money) when is money actually going to be returned from this type of investment?

As other posters have said, it is highly unlikely unless somebody donated 100 million to build a stadium. Even with new facilities they would have to produce a consistent winner for anyone to give a shite and even then they would be very lucky to put 30000 butts in a stadium.

where would they even build it? Tulane's not exactly a wide open campus.

Meh, the school was definitely hurting after Katrina, but the endowment has nearly doubled since then. It was in the $600 million range and is now in the $1 billion range. It's still not enough to sink nearly a hundred million into a football stadium for a program that loses money though

Some of the old 'green pants' contingent are contending that the stadium would run somewhere around $40-$50 million and just be a 30k seat open air stadium. My question is, how rinky dink of a stadium are they planning for $40 million?

Where the current practice field is. Tear down the Wilson Center and incorporate the AD offices in the stadium.

Tulane is not going to be dropped from D1, trust me. If what I'm hearing is true, they are not only going to announce some capital projects, but are also for the first time in a long time going to level the playing field as far as their athletes go.

As well as building a volleyball/basketball practice facility into the stadium design as well (the money for which has already been raised since their athletic review in 2003, as I understand it, somewhere in the wide range of 10-20 million).
The area in question is north of the Riley Center (aka student rec), east of the houses in Audubon Place, south of Turchin, and west of Ben Weiner Drive. The modular housing there is temporary and set to be closed when one of their dorms under construction is completed. The football practice field would obviously be incorporated into the stadium. The tennis courts would have to be relocated or eliminated, and the Wilson Athletic Center would have to be incorporated into the stadium design. But that's the (allegedly) proposed footprint (that has been officially denied by the University, twice now), and it could possibly work if they had the money.
Parking is a problem, although any new parking facility that would be built could be used for both that stadium, Turchin, the Riley Center, and their campus in general so the time to recoup cost from a garage could be significantly less than if it was built for a stadium alone.

I am hearing that they will allow JC's and lower admission standards as well. People seem to forget that Tulane was actually competitive some what in recruiting with LSU not that long ago. A new on campus stadium would be great for Tulane and the entire area of Uptown NO.

And believe me, regardless of what Cowen and Gibson hall said, they did not cut the programs due to money constraints. It was an opportunity to push tulane more in the direction of the "small liberal arts hub" type of a school. My program, mechanical engineering, was operating in the black.

I'd mix in a Tulane game every year if they had an on-campus stadium. Would be fun as hell.

They'd still have the Superdome option for any crowds that might go over 32k or whatever, too.

No doubt. I would go to atleast half the games. And don't ever forget, they would serve BEER at their games.
