I went to my neighborhood Ralphs recently to buy some fish. I am very particular about fish. Growing up in New Orleans every fish I ate had just been pulled out of Lake Pontchatrain, or Lake Bourne, or the waters around the Rigolets, or Shell Beach, Chef Pass, Grand Isle, etc. If the fish is not very fresh I'm not going to buy it.

So, I ask the guy behind the fish counter if I can smell the fish I was interested in buying. The conversation went like this:

Me: Can I smell that fish, please? (pointing to some filets)

Him: You want to smell it? (asking incredulously)

Me: Yes, if you don't mind.

Him: Okay. (as in "whatever, weirdo" as he shrugs his shoulders)

.....He hands me the fish and I smell it. It has a very fishy smell. I guess it to be several days old.

Me: It has a very fishy smell. (handing the fish back to him)

Him: It's...fish. (as in, duh)

Me: Good-bye.

I made Cajun meatloaf instead.

What do you expect, the fish likely smelled fresher than Ralphina. The BR are has very few outlets for fresh seafood, Tony's is about it.

yeah but a chain supermarket - even in a coastal city - isn't the best place to go for fresh fish.

Quite true. This has been a dilemma for the 16+ years I have lived here.

You'd be surprised how difficult it is to find a place that sells good fish in my area of Los Angeles. I ask just about everyone I know for recommendations, but nobody seems to know a good fish monger around these parts.

Where would you suggest that I go?

Hmmmm. According to Powerman, tigre, and a few others, S. California is supposed to be a utopoia for procuring food products.

What do they know that you don't?

Sorry, didn't make myself clear, looking for local salt water fish.

Tommy's Fish House - not tried yet
Off the Hook - great when they opened, last few visits, not so fresh looking.
Maxwells - Have to try
Heads and tails - last week had talapia & catfish
place on Jones creek - Jimbo's usually just catfish & tuna
place on O'Neal - LA Boilers, O'Neal & Perkins is catfish only.
that's just in my running areas

I think Maxwell's is my best bet for snapper, redfish or trout.

I second this. Nothing looks fresh in the place. what is scary is don't they distribute a bunch of seafood. I can only hope they just sell the old stuff in the store.

I got a hell of a deal on a nice salb of tuna one Sunday because he got it Friday. It was very good not a strong fishy taste or smell at all, very good people at Tommys and plus the food is great I am glad to have a good local place I can count on for fresh/decent seafood.

you should email Jason

all joking aside, it's gotta be tough for the posters who own restaurants when they read this kind of negative stuff about their place.

ETA: question for all

do you think chicken should allow the local owners to identify themselves and defend their restaurants from these kind of negative comments?
