Baseball America
Virginia took two out of three on the road against East Carolina in the marquee series of college baseball's opening weekend and moved up to No. 1 in the Baseball America Top 25 rankings for the first time ever.
While Virginia, which ranked second in the preseason, was winning on the road in a tough environment at then-No. 18 East Carolina, its path to the top of the rankings was cleared when preseason No. 1 Texas was upset at home by New Mexico. The Longhorns won the opener but dropped the next two games and fell to No. 3 in the rankings, with Louisiana State moving to No. 2 after sweeping Centenary.
Texas wasn't the only top 10 team upset on opening weekend. Preseason No. 4 Cal State Fullerton lost its first two games to Oregon and Pepperdine before salvaging the finale with a win against rival Long Beach State. Meanwhile, Rice went on the road to Stanford and was swept in a three-game series, the first time that's happened to the Owls in five years. Fullerton and Rice fell to No. 8 and No. 9, respectively.
Since most of the preseason Top 25 teams opened the season with series wins against lesser opponents, there wasn't a lot of movement throughout the rankings. Stanford, thanks to sweeping Rice, was the only team to join the rankings this week, jumping in at No. 18. Georgia fell out of the rankings after a 2-2 weekend.

That's crap ! We go undefeated and get passed by a 2-1 team? And Texas has a losing record and is ahead of 4 undefeated teams...

Winning 2 out of 3 on the road against E. Carolina is more impressive then a sweep of Centenary at this point

I guess...but I had to bitch about something..I mean this is the RANT fro crying out loud !

But we are LSU damnit!! Plus we are the defending champs.

LSU was expected to dominate Centenary.
One thing that will hurt LSU during non conference is not ever going on the road for a tough weekend. They make up for it during sec play whereas a Rice can go to Stanford and play a CUSA schedule although CUSA ought to be pretty good this year but their bottom teams are horrible.
SEC probably ought to have everyone play each other and eliminate one non conference weekend to add to the strength of schedule.

Virginia should not be ranked ahead of us. They lost one of those games 6-1 and allowed 11 runs in one of the other ones. That's not a number one team.

The biggest farce here is Texas moving down 2 spots dropping a home series against freaking New Mexico.l They should be out of the top 10.

Yeah but LSU beat Centenary by a run and the third game was competitive most of the way.
If LSU was playing another top 25 opponent maybe they lose 2 of 3.

Size doesnt have to be related to being a tough environment. Georgia Southern doesn't typically draw over 2000 and the pitcher and first baseman will get heckled to death.
This weekend the Tennessee Tech baseball team went to a local restaurant my friend works at and they all said how they couldn't help but hear all the heckling and said it did distract them.

Texas only dropping to #3 is a joke. I mean 1-2 vs. New Mexico?? Fullerton dropped 4 spots after losing to Oregon and Pepperdine and as a fan I can say that that may have been too generous, but they did beat LBSU.
I think UVA should be #1 right now. As mentioned by others, Virginia took 2 of three from a good team and games 1 and 3 of LSU vs. Centenary were competitive.
SIDE NOTE: I was at the first game of the Rice-Stanford double header on Saturday. Rice looked really sloppy late in the game and their bullpen STRUGGLED BIG TIME!
