I was just reading about stadiums in the NFL and it said Edward Jones Dome was quickly becoming outdated. We all know about the King Dome and RCA Dome being demolished now. What is it that has made the Superdome last so long? Was it the initial design, its location, constant upgrades or a combo of all?

The initial design is much more unique than the others...they are all essentially the same and in non-descript locations.

All of the above.
Buster Curtis who designed it was way ahead of his time. He made it expandable, too, thus adding the newer suites atop the loge.

The State and/or Team couldn't afford to build a new one?

Many different factors has kept the Superdome updated.

- Dave Dixon's vision of a multipurpose facility, an arena of the future. That place was the best of the best when it opened.

- Katrina. I know we're tired of hearing about it, but prior to the storm all the talk was New Stadium this and that. FEMA & the Feds were able to give us funding to update the Dome prior to 2006.

- SuperBowl/SugarBowl/Final Fours/etc - big games = big money.

- Location, Location, Location. The piece of real estate that the Dome sits on is prime. Not many stadiums are in the middle of downtown. It's easy to tear down a stadium if it is not a main part of your skyline. Plus there is no real place to put a new stadium in downtown New Orleans. If a new stadium was built near Laplace or in NO East, NOLA would lose it's Big Game appeal. The number of hotels, restaurants, entertainment & meeting venues within walking distance to the Dome make it an appealing Big Event site.

- It's New Orleans, a vacation destination. If you are planning a big event like the Final Four or a Super Bowl, do you want to go to Detroit or Indy in the middle of winter, or do you want to go to a city like New Orleans?

Astrodome is still standing, but it would take a lot more money to fix it up than it is worth.

Don't forget this one:

The Pontiac Silverdome, built three decades ago for $56 million, is being virtually given away — sold at auction for a paltry $583,000. That comes out to $7.25 a seat, a fire sale that’s reduced the once-proud arena to another sad symbol of the Detroit area’s economic collapse.

I always wished that they had put it next to the river instead of on the west side of downtown. I think that would be a bad-arse view coming over the bridge from the westbank to see the superdome. maybe someone who's good at photoshop can show what that looks like.

am I reading this correctly? did you say lack of passionate fans, or was the "lack of" only relating to the funding?

The size, ability to update and renovate, location, and really lack of true need to build a new one.
