Douglas has won 2 Academy Awards. His first for One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest and his second for Wall Street.
Hurt has been nominated for 4 Academy Awards and has won 1.
IMO Douglas > Hurt
but it's close.

You know that was as a producer and not for acting right? He wasn't in the movie so I don't know if it can be used as an example of his acting prowess.
He was in Romancing the Stone, however, so he gets points for that.
I think Hurt's role in Broadcast News was excellent as well. Too bad he ran up against Douglas as Gecko for the Oscar.

Douglas was never in any movie as good as Body Heat or Dark City, so Hurt.

I like Douglas' body of work better than Hurt's, but I think Hurt is the better actor... if that makes any sense. I am confusing even myself today.

Maybe try a contest that includes actors that actually complement each other and/or have an actual relation besides being actors. e.g.
Klaus Kinski -vs- Bruno S
Toshiro Mifune -vs- Takashi Shimura
Michael Keaton -vs- Johhny Depp
Things like that.

Little known fact . . . Douglas kicked Hurt's arse two out of three times in leg wrestling.

You're dealing with someone that list Back to Future as a Billy Zane movie.

Hurt
And it's not really close. Better catalog, better acting.
Michael Douglas often plays......Michael Douglas.

I may agree just a little. But Hurt does "whiny Hurt" pretty often, and I think it's easy to underestimate Douglas. "Wall Street" vs. "Wonder Boys".

true, but I think Hurt gets further away from his comfort zone than Douglas.

"Wonder Boys".
Easily Douglas' best film.

Hurt has really good smaller roles. It think it's a testament to the actor if they can take something small and make something special out of it. Check out his retired CIA operator in Syriana and his kills it in History of Violence. Kills it.

Add Altered States to Hurt's list. Great movie

Hurt is one of those actors that many people just don't think of off the top of their heads. Hurt is GREAT, and Douglas can't hold his script.

Michael Douglas plays himself in every movie. Hurt plays a variety and excells at it
Hurt> Douglas
