Now that the regular season is over.
Does anybody agree with this?
I think he did a great job with the average D-line he had.
3rd downs were still nerve racking.
Still better than last year.

This LSU defense could possibly be the best defense to rarely get QB pressure of all time.

The defense was not exciting but played well enough to make every game winnable. It's like a Lou Tepper defense that works better.

I saw plenty of 3rd and Chavis. In fact, the Arkansas game gave me a whole season's worth of 3rd and Chavis.

Chavis' D generated turnovers much better than last year, converting a few for TD's that were crucial. Without defensive TD's we lose to MSU and possibly Washington.

I agree
Lack of pressure on mallet especially on 3rd downs was tough to watch though.

I was with him until we started rushing 3 and then continued to rush 3 whilst getting picked apart.

Bottom line. The defense played well enough to win every game. 13 points to the Gators-Offense let the team down. Alabama- Great defensive play, maybe the best of the year, wiped out by a horribly incompetent officiating crew, thus denying the offense a chance to win the game. Ole Mrs- Team mismanagement on offense lost the game though the defense did give up too many yards. Anyway, Chief's defense did not lose any games and that is a big improvement.

3rd and chavis defiantly exist. 3rd and 20 vs arky with the game on the line = arky first down bc of prevent d on 3rd down

Don't forget that our linebackers were a very average bunch also. Overall Chavis did a very good job.

Yes, the defense was better than last year. Better than the worst defense LSU has had in at least 11 years, maybe ever. Chavis is good. Not great, but good.

I never pined for Chavis when he was at Tennessee and wasn't as thrilled at the hire as some, but he "coached up" his position without question and definitely improved the defense.

Of course improving on last years product was not a big chore, but he improved it significantly nonetheless and should be given that due credit.

IMHO Chavis is solid. Not innovative or spectacular but solid. I see him as a defensive version of Jimbo Fisher in that respect and we could do much worse, as we showed in 2008.

This year's defense was waaaaay beyond my expectations. A+ for Chavis.

Agreed. I hope the D line gets better, then we can judge the 3rd down situation.

That's not saying much. I thought expectations were higher at LSU.

I said it before but give him a Dorsey, another Peterson to lock down the other side of the field, and better linebackers and there is a big difference on that side of the ball. The man did really well considering the holes we had on that side of the ball.

The Good
- as mentioned our D gave us a solid chance to win every game this year and yes a more competent offense would have helped
- much improved LB play
- made some great TO's (Kelvin before the half at Bama, Hawkins against AU, Chad Jones against Arky, PP's int return for a TD)
- did a good job of keeping teams out of the end zone for the most part
- great against UGA, AU, and 1st hald Aky; good against UF (pts-wise)

The Bad
- didn't help the offense out a lot either
- difficult time getting off the field
- the 3rd and Chavis is legit
- not enough pressure on QB's
- couldn't stop te run when it really counted against OM and Bama. McCluster and Ingram are excellent backs but we shouldn't concede defeat just because we're playing the best.
