Understand History? How can they understand History when they are continually taken things out of the History books that pertain to our Countries Greatness. You have to remember that France was and has been biggest scaredy cat and Germany the biggest outlaws the world has ever seen. You will not find that in the History books this day and age.

With learning like that how do you expect these young people of this day and age to respect something as great back then? There is no way they can understand what greatness is. To them it here to day and gone tommorrow and that is the way it is.

For someone to say that Cecil Collins was even a maybe best player in LSU is unconcievable. They a player do something in one game or for one year and they are the best that ever was.

This why back then you had to be great every year not just one year as it is today. Back then the Freshmen did not play on the Varsity team they played on the Freshmen Team.

Billy Cannon did what he did that one game the whole year and not only for that one year he did it all 3 years he played at LSU.

When he went to the Pro's he played for Houston Oilers and got hurt after leading the old NFL in rushing and hurt his back and thought he was going to have to retire, but he did not retire. He came back to the team and he played Tightend because he was such a great blocker. They wanted to use him in some way because he was such a great talent.

Then he got traded in a mullty player deal with Kansas City Chief's played there for 2 years and led the league his last year in receptions and then was traded to the Oakland Raiders where he played for 7 years and was considered the best Tightend in the game at that time.

He not only won the Hiesman his play on the field showed throughout his playing days in the NFL he deserved it. Not like the ones who win it today. They use it to increase there worth in their contracts whereas then they only got drafted higher and yes they got higher salary but nothing like what they make today. Then they did not have to prove themselves like today because all they have to do is be great for one year and you win the Trophey then you had to be great for 3 years in order to win the Trophey.

Yes Billy Cannon's Punt Return was great because the winning the game depended on it. Everyone that was in the Stadium that night and listened to it on the radio did not know the impact on LSU's football History that run would later have. All they knew was their hero did the unexpected that night and not just any night on Halloween Night of all night's.

No nobody expects people to forget what Billy Cannon did as for as the couterfitting scheme goes, but it still does not takeaway from what he did that night 50 years ago this Saturday Night and no, it does not takeaway what Billy Cannon did for LSU Football the 3 years he played. No one and I mean no one has done what he did during those 3 years with the running and blocking, punting, tackeling and interceptions and punt returns. He just did what he thought he had to do unlike the players today only do one thing and think they are better players than those that played the game in Billy Cannon's day. I do not believe they would be able to hold up the way he or any of his teammates. No I am not taking away from they do today because each player has a skill that they focus on.

That is why Billy Cannon's Punt Return is so remembered to this day so that the players in his day could be remembered for and to build on their History. I hope that History does not become lost but it is remembered just as these Tigers of today will be remembered to help them stay focused and as incouragement for them to become great.

LSU's History is second to none whenit comes to College Football and because of those like the Billy Cannon Punt Return will always be remembered by all.

So was Cannon's run great because of the run itself or because of the impact of the run? If it was the former, then there probably have been more impressive individual plays. If the latter, then you could call Cie Grant's hit on Dorsey in the second overtime of the fiesta bowl a better play since it resulted in Ohio State winning the national championship.

Billy Cannon was the first to put LSU football in the National spotlite

Not the first, during my Dad's years at LSU in the 30s LSU was a national contender. In my Dad's freshman year of 1936 the undefeated Tigers finished 2nd in the first year of the AP Poll.

Cannon's punt return against Ole Miss is legendary for a number of reasons:

1. It was an incredible individual play.
2. The play defined a prodigious college career.
3. It occured in a clash of top teams.
4. It occured at night in Tiger Stadium on Halloween, so there's "mystique" surrounding it.

It really was a "huge deal" and it deserves to be.

HOWEVER... I would appreciate a couple of considerations from LSU and the media in general:

First, please consider that when you show the clip of this play during an LSU game, it is very likely that we saw it the week before, and the week before that... and will likely see it two or three more times during LSU football games to come this season. Give it a rest. There were other great plays in Tiger Stadium, too.

Secondly, not all LSU alumni are as enamoured with Billy Cannon as a certain few are. While I appreciate his dedication to the university as a player, his record as an ambassador of LSU has not been very good. Some would even say he's an embarassment, considering his fall from grace due to his conviction on federal charges. He is not the LSU figure I would choose to focus on for national TV broadcasts.

That being said, I am glad to see that people are starting to give him a second chance in their hearts and minds. I'm no Cannon-worshipper, but he deserves the opportunity to make amends within the university community.

different era back then. We had the one championship year but other than that, we kinda sucked. Plays like that weren't common for us like they are today.

So was Cannon's run great because of the run itself or because of the impact of the run?

Both, It was a great run because of the timing of the run and the way he ran it back and it also showed his deterination to runback as for as he couldnot knowing when he started that it would end up in the endzone. Also the impact it had on the game, but there was another play later in that game that would prove to be the game winner an Ole Miss runner was stopped on the one or two yard line to preserve the 7-3 win.

The impact it has had on LSU Football has been that this time every year taht run is seen by millions of football fane across this Country and now around the World. So you tell me the impact it has not only on LSU Football but the SEC and College Football in general.

It was in itself a great run back and achievement for Cannon to do what he did not only on that single play but what he did on just about every play he played while a member of the LSU Football team. He did more while he played than any one single player in the History of LSU Football IMHO. That is why it will always be remembered as a great play in the History of LSU and in all of College Football and also because of the determination he showed during that run in all of Sports for that matter. To me it is right up there with any and all achievements of any other athelete in all of Sports. This of course, is my humble opinion.

Regarding Cannon's run that may be the dumbest thing ever posted. Sad alleged LSU fans have so little understanding of its football history.

bba u must be very young. I was a season ticket holder during that run. I was in the south end zone & it was unreal. ol' piss came back & lsu made goal a goal line stand to win the game. Cannon was an all American on both sides of the ball.

You have to be kidding me. The Hester punt return for Miami was against Duke. DUKE! Are you really going to compare breaking tackles against Duke to breaking tackles against an Ole Miss team from 1959 (and for the uniformed, Ole Miss football was to the 50's and 60's what USC is today....loaded and always in the top 10).

Nah, I was screwing around late last night and decided to start some shite. I'm in my 50's. I appreciate the play. In fact, I got into a heated discussion with a youngster during the Tommy Casanova (my favorite all time Tiger)number ceremony. He was trying to tell me he would just be ordinary today. I couldn't relay how good of an athlete he was to him.

Cannon's run was great. I read an article about that Ole Miss defense. It was one of the best ever. Jake Gibbs of Ole Miss claims to this day he meant to kick it out of bounds (which I do not believe).

I just can't let that pass. From 58 (the Tigers' championship year) through 64, the Tigers didn't suck by a long shot.

In 59, the Tigers finished #3 (bowl games didn't count then).

In 60 a mostly sophomore team was the nations' #1 in defense against scoring (although they lost 4 games).

The 61 Tigers were one of the best teams ever, finishing #4 and man-handling the Big8 Champ in the Orange Bowl.

The 62 Tigers finished #7 shutting out undefeated #4 Texas in the Cotton Bowl.

Yes, the Tigers went through a few mediocre seasons in the mid-60s, but still had some great games and big plays.

Yea, the guy who went on to win the Heisman in a game where LSU was #1 vs #3 team is really overrated.

you may have not forgiven him, but the courts and society have...he served his time and rehabbed his image. i'm not even sure it's still a crime to print $50 million in counterfit money.

Cannon was coerced, threatened and blackmailed in that case. He was totally taken advantage of and framed into that situation.

What's also true is the prosecution's comment that Cannon never used his name and prestige to garner special treatment. He was in trouble and did his time without expecting special treatment.

To top it off, he's done really great work as the dentist at Angola after being released, giving some of these guys the only dental care they've ever received.

Cannon's fall from grace was very public, but you have to appreciate the way he has dealt with it and attempted to make amends.

For the old-timers on here, do you know the story about Cannon originally not wanting to go to LSU but wanting to go to Florida instead?
