Last night's baseball Coaches Committee meeting (updated)
Posted on 9/22/09 at 8:50 pm
Posted on 9/22/09 at 8:50 pm
- "the administration" has vetoed a radar gun for the Box
- 1,000 more seats to be added in right field for next season
- the national championship flags will be brought in from the outfield and put on 6 new flag poles in the circle in front of the main gate at Alex Box. They will be illuminated all night every night.
- a new intimidator will be installed before next season. The location was not specified.
- Blake Dean's shoulder surgery was successful and he will begin the Fall practice with the team on October 13.
- the championship team is going to Washington to meet with President Obama 'soon.' The date is kept secret for security reasons.
- the 13 new players introduced themselves tonight. The kid from Iowa, pitcher Mitch Mormann, is a giant in the mold of Renaudo. The catcher who originally signed with Georgia, Ed Sparks, will keep the team loose. He's a cut up. The new players sang the LSU fight song for the crowd. American Idol, they ain't!
- Recruiting for the next signing period is going very well. Four recruits and their families were at LSU last weekend for the ULL game.
- (Updated edit from a question on page 4 of this thread regarding the 'retired' jersey numbers on the outfield walls) Coach M said that only two baseball numbers have been officially 'retired'....Ben McDonald's and Skip Bertman's. Wally Pontiff's and the other one whose name escapes me now are not really retired. They were put up on the outfield fence but were not retired, although no one has worn either of those numbers since they were put up on the fence in the old Box. He thinks that Ben's and Skip's numbers will be officially recognized somewhere in the new Box as being 'retired' but he does not think the other two will be. He said the athletic department is currently developing guidelines for retiring numbers, including the number of an athlete who passes away while he or she is an active member of a team, like Wally.

Do we know the design yet? Exactly like LFB or more like the stands behind the foul lines?

Coach Mainieri didn't give any details. He just said 'in right field' behind the fence.
quote:Coach M appeared reluctant to talk about it. This topic was a question from one of the members in the audience. PM said he didn't want to appear to not be on the same page as the 'administration' so he wasn't going to say anything about the decision other than a radar gun won't happen. He did say that if enough fans wrote to the AD's office, maybe.......???

Yes, a taller, bigger and permanent batter's eye will be built before the season starts
quote:He didn't specifically say 'no berm.' He just said 1,000 more seats behind the right field fence.

He also gave a game by game recap of the CWS from his perspective. It was one of the best insider talks I've ever enjoyed. The things that go on in the dugout during a game between the coaches and players is really remarkable. The conversation he had with Louis Coleman on the mound after Texas hit their 3rd homerun in the first game (which we won in extra innings) was funny and also provided insight into the relationship between Coleman and Mainieri.
Anything else??

Did he mention who he's looking at to play 3rd base next season possibly?
When will the hall of fame area be completed?

quote:The current team has not practiced together as a team yet, so....no, he didn't go into specifics about any player positions. Fall practice starts 10/13 and all practices will be open to the public.

When will the hall of fame area be completed?
He said it should be completed before next season and will cost approximately $130,000 to deck out. Also, Gerry Lane Enterprises has made a "significant" donation to create a "winner's circle" in front of the main entrance to the Box where the national championship flags will be hosted. The winner's circle will also include other memorabilia, inlays in the bricks and plagues celebrating the history of LSU baseball.
Another thing I just remembered from the meeting, the team will receive their CWS championship rings during a ceremony at Alex Box the afternoon of the Tulane football game, which is a night game.

BOO! BOO! BOO! BOO!
Just put another six outside and LEAVE THE ONES IN THE OUTFIELD ALONE!
Why does LSU always always always have to f*** with things that look good???

Thank you for the info. Won't someone just donate the radar equip?

One thing that really sticks out is when Blake Dean came to bat with the bases loaded in game three vs. Texas when Texas' All-World lefty, Austin Wood, was pitching.
PM raised his hand and swore to the audience he was not crazy and he was telling the truth. He proceeded to say the night before he dreamed about that exact same game situation. He said in his dream Wood was throwing inside to left-handed pitchers in order to set up his hard down and away slider.
So, (back to reality) he said that was when he ran out of the dugout and grabbed Dean. (I remember that because one of the announcers commented on Mainieri going almost all the way to the batter's box to talk to Dean.)
He said he told Dean about his dream and told BD to crowd the plate. Dean did and got hit to force in a run. He said when Dean was trotting to first base, he looked in the dugout and gave PM a look he'll never forget and held out his arms as if to say, "It worked!"
One other thing he said that in the 9th inning when Louis Coleman got the first batter out, PM said Coach Grewe said to him, "Two outs to go to a national championship!" PM said it caught him by surprise because in baseball you don't think things like that, much less say it out loud. He said he told Grewe to be quiet and don't talk like that.
After Coleman walked the next batter, he said he turned to Grewe and gave him a "see what I mean?" look.
Then after the next batter got out, Grewe said, "One out to go to a national championship!" PM said all he could do that time was laugh.

Did he mention how Didier is doing after his surgery?
