Feeling nostalgic. My mom was the worst cook in the history of south La. Typical menu when I was a kid:

Breakfast: Slice of toast with butter. Cup of coffee. Yep, I started drinking coffee at 5 yo.

Lunch: Liver Cheese sammich on white bread with mayo. Glass of OJ.

Dinner: Canned green beans, Heat-n-Serve dinner rolls with butter. Rice with catsup (no gravy since no meat).

This was Monday thru Friday. Then dad cooked on Sat and Sun:

BBQ chicken or burgers, gumbo, etoufee, crawfish, crabs, fried catfish, courbillion, etc.

if that is really true i feel bad for you!

my mom was an "ok" cook...she made about 10 different things and would always rotate them. nothing flashy...but she did make sure we had a meat, a veggie, and a fruit each meal. i do the same thing for my kids, just with a bit more flare and more options. she never did fast food; i'll do it once every few months...we also never got dessert as kids; atleast once a week i give my kids something sweet (even though sometimes its just yogurt, fruit and coolwhip).

Lots of Cubans have this for breakfast, and dip the toasted Cuban bread into their cafe con leche.

My parents are great cooks.

When I turned 18 I registered for the draft (during Viet Nam). I still have my draft card. It says:
5-8, 112 lbs. In retrospect I guess I suffered from malnutrition. While it was happening I just thought "Wow, this food really sucks."

Is there anything they made when you were a kid that they stopped making? As I get older I forget stuff that I made years ago that my kids remind me of.

My parents are both great cooks. I'd rank my Mom as outstanding. Eating her meals are like eating in a fine restaurant.

My mom would go back & forth between crap & really good stuff.

The crap was often cheap, easy meals: boxed mac & cheese with a can of tuna fish or cut-up hot dogs was pretty standard.

Good stuff she made: awesome stuffed fish, manicotti/canneloni, baked chicken in wine sauce.

My friends family is Cuban..his mom or grandma would fix this for us after we got back from the bar. I like to dip the crust in the coffee....good stuff

my mom is an awesome cook, my dad can be good but often times can frick it up.

i find what separates good from bad cooks is cutting corners. people who feel that you can always cut corners can't cook worth shite. The people that take the time to not always cut corner do pretty good

Sometimes you need to cut corners, but you can't make it a habit otherwise you can't cook.

Damn Zach, you were abused. My mom used to be a great cook, now not so much. Here spaghetti now tasted like battery acid. I have to keep coming up with excuses why I don't want any of it.

My Brazilian wife says that buttered bread is a very common breakfast in her culture. Sounds pretty boring to me.

Dad could not boil water
Mom(rest in peace) claim to fame was her tuna casserole...tuna cheese and potato chips...life was better when hamburger helper came out...before that I nurtured a taste for peanut butter....of course we were poor...I remember the whole family splitting a grit for breakfast.

My mom cooked but I don't remember much of it since I moved out at 15. I try to avoid her cooking nowadays, since she refuses to use any seasonings.
