Damn! Tiger fans are critical!!

I am also critical of the Tigers at times, but give me a break!
1. Washington is a much better team than the 0-12 team of last year. Jake Locker is the real deal and may be the best QB we face this year, including Tim Tebow. He is big, fast, smart and accurate. Their defense virtually shut down the Charles Scott.
2 . LSU's defense played much better than everyone thinks. Rarely was a receiver uncovered although sometimes the coverage was a little soft. That in itself bodes well since I believe that missed or blown coverage was the biggest fault in last year's defense. I think they will tighten the coverage as their confidence grows and the fear of giving up a big play subsides. I too was upset with missed tackles, but that can be fixed over time. He who continues to miss tackles can be replaced. There is some young, talented, aggressive talent waiting in the wings. I was disappointed with the play of Chad Jones. Is he a victim of not having to compete for his position or maybe basking in the glory of his role in a baseball national championship? I don't really know, but Patrick Peterson certainly didn't disappoint. He seemed to be everywhere.
3. LSU play calling was very conservative and unimaginative. Washington was stacking the line and effectively stuffing the run game, but Charles Scott kept getting the call. Granted, he could have broken a long one at any time, but he didn't. The most effective plays were QB keepers, sweep option plays, and passes to Toliver and LaFell. It appeared that the coaches were still afraid of letting Jefferson play to his capabilites, living in fear of what happened last year with JL. I believe we call it "playing not to lose". That will change after the confidence in Jefferson grows.
4. Helton was not effective in his punting role. However this venue is a far cry from Ft. Scott Community College or wherever he played last year. He will get better when he gets over the jitters. I hope he can handle the crowd in Tiger Stadium.
For the most part, I thought this team played hard and there were numerous players that were impressive. Bottom line - I like this team! The Washington game is the first game of the season in an unusual environment. There may have been some underestimating of the quality of their opponent or whatever. But this LSU team shows immense talent, is more comfortable on defense, is very fast, has a great attitude and team spirit, and Jordan Jefferson will be the best LSU QB we have had in a long time, with the possible exception of Matt Flynn. And that includes Jamarcus Russell, who I thought was a great passer but not a great QB. This team will get better and better as the season rolls on and has the potential to finish at least in the top 10 or maybe even at the top.

Jake Locker did play in a few games last year, and obviously Washington still lost all of them. And to say that a defense that has been horrific over the past few seasons and plays in the Pac 10 shut down LSU's running game doesn't mean that they're all of a sudden good. It means LSU was very underwhelming in that game. Remember when (like a week ago) all LSU fans made fun of the schedule USC plays and made fun of the Pac 10 for being so great? Now the worst team from that league plays with LSU and all of a sudden they are so improved overnight? I don't get it.

GTFO with that crap. He'll be 4th at best. Tebow, Snead, and Mallet are all better.

I agree w/ you on Matt Flynn. He was very good. However, Jamarcus Russell was outstanding. In fact the '06 team w/ JR may have been better than the '07 champ team. '07 got the breaks and had the MNC opportunity.

I quit reading after I saw something regarding Locker being better than Tebow. LSU made Locker look as good as Tebow. I think he was less than a 50% passer before the game Sat. LSU made him look like an all American.

LSU's defense played much better than everyone thinks.
quote:Totally understandable and I had no problem with it except when we came out throwing with 11 minutes left in the game up by 11. We went three and out and burned like 90 seconds off of the clock. Bad Coaching!

bigpapamac your comparing apples to oranges...
last year was a totally different coaching staff...
so locker played a few games and they still lost.
they will not be the worst team this year in the pac 10
they win next week and then they will give USC hell the following week (now that they have USC off & def coordinators) at home .
So you don't get it ???? teams improve sometimes
i, for one underestimated U W
they are better than i expected

How about coaching at Washington? They had talent last year but poor coaching. This year - a whole new coaching staff plus USC's offensive coordinator is now head coach and USC's defensive coordinator is now Washington's defensive coordinator.

Locker was freshman player of the year in 2007! How many bad passes did he throw Saturday? One, Cutrera's interception.
Posted on 9/7/09 at 7:03 pm to guttata
I didn't see Locker when when he was throwing for less than 50% completions. I did see him on Saturday night. If the Locker I saw completed less than 50%, then the receivers couldn't catch.

I promise if we give up 500 yards of offense every week we will lose most if not all SEC games...

I wouldn't count on them giving USC hell. You cannot watch them play us and translate that to USC. And BTW, I fricking hate USC so it's painful to say that.

coolmonk we'll see in 2 weeks, i'm sticking with U W giving USC hell

It's still nothing to brag about. Choklahoma beat Washington with Jake Locker 55-14. Sorry, but I don't believe Jefferson can avoid injury with our schedule, and we may be stuck with Lee soon.

The weird question is, what kind of LSU fan goes into denial over evidence of how good LSU is?
