If you wondered why Athletic projects are on hold...

Wonder no more:
The Daily Reveille

quote:
“Students who say we should take money from athletics need to understand that we do,” said Chancellor Mike Martin. “Athletics is the front porch to the University, but I always remind people that a front porch is only as good as the house it’s attached too.” The University has always taken money from the Athletic Department and will be asking for more as a result of budget cuts, according to athletic director Joe Alleva and senior associate athletic director Herb Vincent. The Athletic Department gives 3 percent — an average of about $3.5 million over the past few years — of its budget to the University for administrative overhead in a normal year. The department will be asked to give back 5 percent — about $6 million — of its budget to the University in the fiscal year from July 2009 to July 2010, Vincent said. This does not mean the Athletic Department is short on funding for its current projects, but it does have less money to start future projects, meaning delays are possible.

WOW! An increase of 2%!
I thought the athletic department gave more than that.
If it isn't clear by these numbers that the university proper needs more support then I don't know what will make it clear.

$114,000,000.00 a year just don't go as far as it used to.

5% of revenues translates to a very significant % of operating profits (out of which a reserve for future capital projects must come). Just how big do you think the Athletic Dept.'s profit margin is? If it's 10%, then 5% of revenues would translate to 50% of profits.

Easy nycajun. There are many on this board that can't figure out 2 + 2.

Every other state athletic budget draws millions of tax dollars for its support, LSU not only takes Zero it gives back 5 million to the University and you find this insufficient?

Slept during math classes?
Try a 66.7% increase.

BS. I pay money, surcharges, to the AD for AD projects. If I wanted to give to academics I would give to academics.

Just curious, did you attend LSU? Also, the Athletic Dept can spend its money however it chooses. If you don't like it, simply stop purchasing their product.

I'm pretty sure this isn't by choice. The University has always taken a percentage of revenues from its auxiliary units. They are increasing the percent this year.

Correct, I should have said LSU can spend the money however they want. There is no athletic department without the academic institution. But then again this attitude shouldn't be unexpected in a state like Louisiana where education isn't highly valued.

Thats not 2% of profit, that 2% of budget. If they make a 10% frofit, that means they are giveing the university 30% of their ptofit, being bumped up to 50%. I say that is a significant increase.......

If state government doesn't care about education, we can't expect football fans to care. This state will never get it.
At least we have quality sports to enjoy ... for now.

With the new ESPN TV deal kicking in this year, won't the SEC members have a much larger revenue pie to cut up in Destin next spring? That %5 of revenue could be much more than 6 million next year with the new TV money.

there's a reason LSU is only a slightly above mediocre academic institution and can't even rank in the top half of the SEC

Correct, and that saddens me as an alumnus.
Posted on 8/1/09 at 12:34 pm to Stromile Swift
As an alumnus, I think money I give to the AD should go to the AD and not academics. If you want to give to academics give to the Alumni Fund. Don't let Obamanomics filter down into bringing down the AD.
