Putting up Jack Nicklaus numbers isn't too shabby, though...

would you rather have jack's or tiger's record through 55 majors? i would take the 14 wins.

Nobody remembers who finished second(except for Rocko that one time)

Would rather have the 3 more wins than the 6 more second place finishes

Jack's competition was much stiffer IMO. Hell one of jacks biggest oppositions almost won a major at 59.

there are so many more golfers that can win now it isn't even close. maybe the top players back then will go down as better golfers but when todd hamilton, shaun micheel and rich beam are winning majors, that says a lot. they are shooting low numbers so don't give me that they aren't good golfers. beem shot -10 and when nickalus won his pga championships his lowest score was -7. the competition argument hurts nicklaus. it makes tiger's accomplishments more impressive.

oh, and did see watson choke?? and nicklaus lost to him a bunch down the stretch.

The competition argument helps Nicklaus. Looking at the numbers, it’s not the DEPTH of competition but the elite level of competition, which caused Jack to finish second or third more often (but both finish in the top 20 about at the same rate). And that’s because of the elite level competition of Watson and Arnie was superior to Vijay and Phil.

And Watson being able to compete at age 59 is a knock against the current competition.

The -10 under vs. -7 is just because of technology bro. The technology also helps even out all the competition which allows for lower rounds and shorter irons/wedges into greens. This doesn't allow for the top golfers to shine as much but doesn't mean the competition was any more stronger than what Nicklaus had to face.

the courses are so much more difficult now. the greens are a hell of a lot faster and the rough thicker. that is why the scores are not getting lower overall. look at us opens at oakmont. cabrera won with +5 and miller in 1973 won with -5. it aint technology bro.

so you are going to tell me the competition was just as deep in the 60's and 70's as it is today??

so because snead competed in the 1970's in his late 50's early 60's that is a knock on that generation's competition? right?

Well, Snead was one of the two or three greatest golfers ever. And at his advanced age, he lost by three strokes. Watson was one of the two or three greatest golfers of his generation, and at his advanced age, he lost by, technically, zero strokes. And he’s not an outlier given that Norman was able to compete recently as well.

Competition: Edge Nicklaus
Golfing Technology/Gear: Edge Woods

Give Nicklaus the same modern technology, gear etc. and watch his scoring average drop.
