Most overachieving LSU Nat'l champs?

Of the 6 baseball nat'l championship teams and the 3 football nat'l championship teams; which was the biggest group of overachievers?

I'll go with the 2007 football team. Despite our lofty ranking through most of the season, that defense was simply not very good. And Flynn was an average QB at best. To win it all with no defense and an average QB was something special and unique.
That team simply refused to give up despite whatever circumstances they faced.

The 58 team really came out of nowhere. 5-5 season before, ranked 37 or something in the preseason but I probably go with 2007 as well. Flynn not a stud/star QB, Hester (not stirring shitte but who's the last natl champ with a white RB as it's leading rusher?) and that defense in the last half of the season was average at best.
But they never ever gave up, 100% heart of a champion and gave Tiger fans a season that might never be duplicated so overachieving is fine but maybe meant more to the state because of everything that happened since 2005.

i'd say that losing 2 games with our talent was a shame, especially with the way we played in some games.

That defense was outstanding before the injuries mounted and most people agree judging by three defensive players chosen for AA honors. At least eight of them(defense) are in the NFL now. And an average college QB does not make an NFL roster. Nosir that team had abundant talent and played that way when healthy. I would say they were slightly better than the '03 team. And for their era, the '58 team was above average talent-wise also. I would have to pick '03 as the biggest overachievers of those three. The '96 baseball team was the least talented imo but still looked like the best team in the country that year to me.

I'll second the 58 team. I know Cannon was a Heisman winner but that wasn't until 59. The team was average at best. They were picked to finish in the middle of the pack in the SEC. Coach D implemented the platoon system that was really a make or break move. We really had no size or power to keep up with the bigger schools though we had great team speed (probably cause the team as a whole was so small).

Flynn was not great, but he was without question an above average college QB. "At best" is absurd.

I agree. He threw for about 2400 yards, but sat out for 2 games. And we had the most productive offense in LSU history and I don't think his job was ever in jeopardy.
I'd take another Flynn anytime.

2000 Baseball. If I recall right, there was plenty talent on the roster, but pitching-wise they were shaky most of the year. Late in the season, the pitching settled down, led by Hodges. (My memory may be totaly off. I drank a lot in 2000).

Flynn & Mauck were solid QBs that didn’t kill you with mistakes
1958 started with the Tigers unranked but by week 7 they were at #1 which they then held for 5 straight weeks. Under head coach Paul Dietzel, the Tigers cruised to an undefeated (10-0) regular season.
2003 LSU's #1 ranked defense held the country's most prolific offense, which had averaged 45.2 points and 461 yards per game, to 154 total yards, and just one touchdown until the closing minutes of the game. Heisman Trophy-winning QB Jason White completed only 13 of his 37 passing attempts for a mere 102 yards, was sacked seven times and intercepted twice.
2007 The first quarter ended with LSU on offense and trailing, 10-3. Flynn & the offense and a healthy defense took the game over. The final score was 37-17 but LSU gave the Buckeyes 7.
