Fordham recruited as Center?

I know we were talking about moving him to an OL/DL due to his potential size. Some talks were also about him being a TE and Jacobs being moved around. But I just saw on scout.com that even though he was listed as a TE b4 he commited to LSU, he is now listed as the 9th ranked CENTER.
Any idea whats this all about? How can we even think that a 235 pound kid can be play Center in the SEC! Know of anyone else in recent SEC history who was around the same weight/built who successfully played Center?

um, because they put on weight when they get into the strength program? brett helms was listed at 275. so the kid needs to put on 40lbs over a few years.

Someone needs to look into e-mailing the AD and asking him about a new strength and conditioning program. I think these guys would be better off if they were lifting weights and on strict diets during the off-season. That could be an advantage later on down the road somewhere.

quote:yeah because there's absolutely no way this kid will get any stronger, bulk up, gain weight in college...no way at all.

He will start at TE, and go from there. Nothing is written in stone before they hit the practice field.

He's not even a senior yet in high school and he won't be playing center for us for a very long time. Calm down.

Yeah T-Bob is the least D1 athlete looking D1 athlete on LSU's team.

i appreciate all the sarcasm and the rhetorical comments. But Seriously. 1) How much truth is there into this. I am not saying that if the coaches thought he could play Center that they are wrong. But this post was to figure out legitimacy regarding this apparant switch in his role.
Also, we dont necessarily need a center atm. We are down on quality on the Line this and next year. And Herbert doesnt graduate for 2 years and Longerman for 3. So i am puzzled that, if this report is true and Fordham will be trained to gain weight and become a Center, why are we necessarily worrying about this whole situation atm in the first place.
From what I have heard, the class of 2011 will be stacked with great talent for such positions, and we dont necessarily NEED a center immediately, so why beat around the bushes and get a TE type guy be trained to become a lineman, especially a center

btw. sorry, but certain remarks from my comment were meant for the first few posts. I kinda walked away from my desk and came back and finished the post so it doenst necessarily make sense with the rest of the posts.
interesting to know about T-bob. That makes me feel a lot better. And thanks for the other names as well. The kid does look like he has some good ability to stand his ground, so maybe the coaches are trying to tap that skill and try him on for size as a center. But as you said, we will figure it all out in fall practice i guess.

High school TE's become college O-Linemen all the time.

rly. i was not aware of that. Thats interesting to know

I'm pretty sure he won't be playing Center in the SEC this Fall at 235.
Also, I'm pretty sure that he won't weigh 235 in 2 years when his weight finally begins to become relevant.

t-bob was athletic enough to earn playing time playing IN SPACE as a freshman. I have never seen another big time program have a freshman center playing away from the line.

Scout moved him to center.

If you can check out any pictures/video of him from the camp, he looks much bigger than 235lbs right now to me. It was without pads so it's a total guess, but I could see him being 260lbs right now.

Bc they obviously think he's one of the best potential linemen out there. Keep in mind that it's a pretty shitty year for guard/centers out there. For example, OC Brown is rated a 4* for some reason, but has virtually no offers right now.

Yep, Stephen Peterman was recruited to LSU as a TE.

Just curious, does anyone know how big Kevin Mawae was in his junior year of high school? A lot of kids don't hit there growing maturity until after high school. That is why so many under-rated players, end up growing into great players in college. Note! See Tyrus Thomas in basketball. That is why it is important to meet the parents of the kids you are recruiting and it is also the case when picking out a potential spouse, seeing her immediate family, mother in particular.

Off the top of my head I can think of Robert Gallery-Iowa, and Jason Smith-Baylor that made the move from TE. I realize that they played tackle and not center though. A big 230-240 pound 17/18 year old doesn't have far to go to be O-Line size by their redshirt sophmore or junior year's in college...You're talking three or four years down the road.
