I'm thinking it might be time for me to get my first credit card. I am about to start my second year of grad school and I'm in a tight spot until I get my stipend in August.
I would be able to pay the card off in full in august and would not have much of a need for it after that, but I think I would still use it from time to time to start to build some credit.
I currently have checking and savings account with Wachovia.
Any suggestions/advice?

Plenty of cards offer an interest free period. I would look for one of those.
Getting cards through your bank is always convenient for keeping track of them, but you should get some rewards and an interest free period.

Be very careful. This is how many people start out at first.

yes, i am actually kind of scared to even get one, i have heard bad stories. I would really only need it for a month to pay bills and buy gas. I have already cut my spending as much as i can.
I think the student card wachovia has might work for me. I don't really need any sky miles or anything too fancy.

my first card was a Bank of America Visa with 0% introductory... I got it when I was in pretty much the same spot you're in now. 4000 limit which I never had over 1500 or so.. it's paid off completely now.

I currently have a Citi MTVU card (VISA). It's student card that gives rewards based on grades, 5x the reward points (ThankYou network) at purchases at places that are tailored towards students (bookstores, fast food, etc.).
Anyway, though, I've heard that the Citi Forward is not a bad card for rewards through the ThankYou Network. The LSU bookstore does count as a bookstore, so if you buy your books there then you'll build up points fast.
If you really want a card with reward program, I suggest check out this FAQ at FatWallet ,which has a pretty comprehensive list of cashback cards.
If you don't want to deal with reward programs and would rather just have a statement credit each month, then check out the PenFed card which I think is 1.75% cashback on all purchases, 5% gas, 2% groceries.

If your "stipend" is from student loans you may want to think about another option. Instead of getting a credit card another option is a bridge loan. Campus Federal offers this and what it allows you to borrow up to $1,500 and would be paid off by proceeds from the student loan. Just some food for thought, credit cards can be very risky if you're not careful.

The stipend isn't a loan, its just cash, but I won't get it until school starts.
