"Oprah Winfrey recently advised her listeners to the notion that it is fine to tip10% or less to restaurant servers due to the current economic crisis."
LINK
So basically she's saying that in this poor economy where many can BARELY survive and pay their bills, it should be made EVEN WORSE for those in the service industry by having their income cut nearly in half because she apparently thinks that dining out is a necessity and not a privledge. How small of her to even think or suggest such a thing ESPECIALLY with the way the economy is right now.

I guess maybe there's sometimes something to sterotypes.

ive never liked her much. the thing is... women dont tip much anyway. so servers are probably only losing out on 5% based on oprah giving this advice anyway. men dont watch oprah. they are how servers make their money anyway.

If you can afford to go out and eat at a restaurant "in the current economic crisis" where you'll be waited on, you can afford 18%+ tip (barring an awful waiter/waitress).

Black people normally tip 9.1%?

I don't believe this. There have practically been scientific studies...ok I'm exaggerating...on the effect that Oprah saying or thinking something has on society. It has a HUGE impact.
When her book club suggestions reach #1 on the bestseller list, it's not because only women are buying the books.

I have worked for tips so I tip well...but someone please explain to me why restaurants can't pay their staff like everyone else and just charge me more on the bill...then the servers could pay taxes like everyone else and get us out of Obama's debt...

simple.
less pocket cash in the possesion of service industry workers would cripple the pot and speed/coke dealers. We can't have this.

I've always felt this is the way it should be done. I hate the entire concept of tipping. It's just ridiculous.

I think that's the best explanation I've ever heard

i think this is a reasonable point.
i'm guessing that if--because of the poor economy--the choice is between people tipping less OR not eating out at all, then the restaurant owners and waitstaff would probably prefer you tip a little less. just a guess, though.

yeah, they would rather still get business and if the servers suffer, so be it. It also keeps takeout as an affordable option.

Without tipping for a service such as this, you provide no incentive for someone to perform their job better. By just providing a flat rate for some smuck to run your food too you, you end up with worse service than we already have now at many places.
You want to see your cost of a meal sky rocket, just ask a restaurant owner to start having to pay his servers $10 to $15 an hour.
Note: Most of what I wrote applies to nicer places. At your cheesy low end joints probably wouldn't matter if you have $8/hour Frank with no benefits running your food. Service already isn't all that great.
