While i am a Reds fan, my Houston location causes me to absorb alot of Astros talk. The astros haven't exactly being tearing it up lately and they are an old team. I know drayton has refused to trade away talent and won't rebuild but the astros may have one of their worst record ever at the all star break under his reigns. What do you think they should do if they keep this up? Who do you think can be traded and who is untouchable? Is there a record that the astros can get too where drayton would consider dealing players?

IMO i would put everyone up on the block expect for Wandy, Pence and Berkman.

Pence would be the one untouchable. I would not be upset if they traded anyone else.(Maybe Berkman)

Agreed I think Pence and Berkman are in Houston to stay. I'm not sure about Wandy, but I like him and I hope he stays. I think they can move Miggy somewhere. He has been absolutely stroking lately. I think the Astros could pull a decent prospect or two in return for him, but that is IMO. Valverde is most definitely on the block, the problem is who would want him? He has been turrable all year. Maybe he comes back off the DL and puts up good numbers until the the trading deadline. There is someone out there that would give up some talent for him I think.

Definitely seems, right now at least, like it's gonna be a long, long time before Astros fans have anything to be hopeful for.

Trade EVERYBODY. Except maybe Berkman or Oswalt and only those 2 for sentimental reasons. But the whole team needs to be blown up.

Why do you guys think Pence is untouchable? He cant really hit a curveball and his production's gone way down since teams figured this out. He's a plus fielder, but if someone made me a really good offer there's no reason not to take it.

His ops is .957
He makes 450k
I don't think he is eligible for arbitration for another 2 years.

I think they wanna make Pence the face of the franchise a la Lance Berkman. He has really matured at the plate. Hasn't been chasing those sliders off the plate and away as much as he used to. I think he is gonna be a solid player for many years to come.

I would say trade everybody, especially Wandy while he's hot.

They have absolutely nobody in the minors and they have so many holes in the majors, the best way to rebuild is to get the highest quantity of minor league talent possible. They can only do that by trading their best players - Berkman, Wandy and Pence.

Now if they are to trade Pence, they better get a talented young starting pitcher in return. Otherwise, what's the point of trading him.

But in reality, none of this will happen.

I'm not an Astro fan...but I have heard this scenario brought up several times on Houston radio shows. There seems to be two sides to the argument. Some Astro fans think that because of those runs they made in 04' and 05' when they were mediocre or shitty out of the gate and at the break, that they will always make the enormous second half runs. Other Astro fans have little to no faith and suggest dumping everyone but Berkman or Pence. I think the true answer lies in between,

How likely is it that Houston gets rid of Valverde?

I don't know how likely given his injury and performance so far this season, but he has been mentioned as a trade possibility by Gammons, for whatever that's worth. There's always a market for relievers. It just depends on the Astros willingness.

I would do the same, but would dangle Wandy to see what I can get. He's having a great trade bait year and he could possibly bring in a couple decent prospects. Berkman and Pence would be the only two I would protect.

Thats right there is the problem with the astros. You make to many sentimental decisions. They need to get rid of Oswalt definetly if they can get some young talent. They basically sacrificed an entire seasonjust so biggio could get his 3000 hits. He had no business leading off or even batting second. Make smart business decisions and maybe the astros will stop sucking.

what do you guys (meaning braves fans) think of medlan, rohrbrough (minor league reliever) and brandon hicks (minor league 2b) for carlos lee if we eat most of his remaining contract. We wouldn't have a lot of cap room for the offseason, but we would have what we need, a power hitting LF

contract really isnt that big of a deal. Lee would be a nice fit for a team with a lot of money. He can still play. Its not like trying to trade some washed up scrub with a high contract. Esp a AL team in need of a DH possibly.
