Spirit Airlines could be used to transport troops, military cargo if Trump admin takes over bankrupt carrier: report
How many of the jumbo jets can we dedicate to deportation efforts?
Imagine keeping all of their terminal leases throughout America and just being able to deport from the already established network?

The White House is reportedly considering a plan to take over Spirit Airlines and use part of the bankrupt carrier’s fleet for military missions.
Under the proposal, President Trump would invoke the Defense Production Act to loan Spirit Airlines money for national defense purposes, CBS News reported on Friday.
The Pentagon would then use the budget airline’s “excess capacity for transporting troops, military cargo or other missions,” the outlet said, citing sources.
Spirit’s creditors would need to sign off on the strategy.

Trump has recently expressed interest in bailing out Spirit.
“We’re thinking about doing it, helping them out and meaning bailing them out or buying it. I think we just buy it,” he told reporters in the Oval Office Thursday.
“We’d be getting it virtually debt free. They have some good aircraft, some good assets, and when the price of oil goes down, we’ll sell it for a profit,” the president added.

They could be used for that purpose now without a take over, all the major carriers are contracted for military support on a regular basis.

Maybe this would subtract contractor markup.

So instead of propping up an entire industry (because you know those contracts are raping taxpayers), we would be self-sufficient and obtain assets for pennies on the dollar?
Sounds genius

Biden admin used them to import illegals.

I would assume Omni, Evergreen etc that are contracted to move military cargo and troops might sue over this plan.

What do you do with all of Spirit’s employees? Do they become government employees? DOD contractors?
I like this idea a lot, it’s just more complicated than it seems.

Those a320s cannot make it from DC to Germany.
So what good would they do?

This is anti free market. Why cut all other carriers out of bidding for this government work? Companies with poor business models fail everyday. Why make an exception for Spirit? They’re a minuscule segment of the passenger carrier market, so no inherent US need to prop them up.
BTW, Spirit has no jumbo jets, just narrow body A320s.

So a shadow fleet of commercial airliners with an undefined mission?
What could go wrong?
Let's roll ...

Agreed. Isn't this Atlas Air and Kalitta Air's rice-bowl?

You are not considering the MX costs, what about the current employees? Do they become federal employees? What base or bases will house this fleet? What’s the infrastructure buildout to accomplish this.
Maybe it’s a good idea, maybe it’s not…
If it’s a win it’s not nearly as easy as it may seem.

America 2025 - 'We're using DOGE to shred the number of worthless government workers and will save money by not starting new wars'
America 2026 - 'We're making people at the worst airline in America government employees in support of our new war'
What a time to be alive baby!

I’d wager those are non-exclusive contracts.
