Incredible, fresh off a playoff arse kicking by Indiana

90 percent of that fanbase was ready to run him out of town

How much longer did his previous contract run? Why was this needed? The Michigan job was no longer available.

So a $10mm buyout if DeBoer wants to leave; and an extra $20-30mm for Alabama if they want to fire him next year?

I think I saw that his previous contract was through 2031 already. Does this mean it's now through 2038? or just 2033?

The reporting on this is unclear.

Previous reports from a few months back stated that if Deboer was fired, Alabama would owe him 90% of his remaining salary left on the contract.

The reporting for this contract ambiguously states:

quote:

His new deal includes an amended buyout: $10 million through January 31, 2027. It drops to $8 million through January 31, 2028, and $6 million through January 31, 2029

Does that mean if he leaves he owes Alabama that amount? Or, is that what Alabama would owe him if they fired him?

I can't see why he would accept a deal that would significantly reduce his buyout if Alabama fires him. H

I think I figured it out despite the confusing wording of the reports.

If DeBoer leaves he owes $10mm

He signed a new 7-year contract averaging $12.5mm, total $87.5mm. (basically got a $2mm/year raise and added 2 years to his existing contract). If Alabama fires him they likely owe 90% of the remaining contract so somewhere between $70-80 million.

I mean they aren’t going to do better than him. They are just another program now that they can’t cheat better than anyone else.

If he ever gets a real QB, he will win a lot. Until then, Bama will continue going 8-4

Pretty comical seeing the posts in this thread from fans of a school that just signed a coach who has never won a single power 5 championship of any kind to a seven-year, $91 million guaranteed contract , and is paying their previous fired head coach a $54 million dollar buyout.

Well, he’s got the QB.

Ignoring the numbers, the guy is a decent OL away from having legitimate title contenders. There have been very high highs and low lows with him, but a good bit of it can be explained by timing and personnel type stuff.

With the way he recruits, snd from what I’ve seen, I’m perfectly happy with him as head coach.

LSU fans are figs.

Why do schools keep doing this?

Alabama gave DeBoer an initial 8 year, $87M contract that was essentially guaranteed (Alabama would owe 90% of his remaining salary if fired without cause). Kiffin's contract is 7 years, $91M, but LSU would only owe 80% of the remaining salary if Kiffin was fired. So the contracts are more or less similar. I guess one could argue that's because he was a "candidate" for the Michigan and Penn St jobs (allegedly). But was there a real threat of him actually taking those jobs?

It seems a bit like Jimbo's extension at A&M. He initially signed a big contract. But it was A&M giving him a big raise/extension following one good season that made the buyout more onerous when they ultimately wanted to fire him.

I think the ridicule is coming from the fact that Alabama just gave a raise and extension to a HC that many in the fanbase want to fire. Thus (seemingly) unnecessarily making it MORE onerous to fire him.

He had Ty Simpson, who's a lot of people's sleeper top QB of this draft.

DeBoer is a good coach. He’s just in an impossible situation filling Saban’s tiny loafers .

But these contracts are insane. He wasn’t going anywhere and now they will be in the same situation as LSU and atm before that.
