On a whim, I bought this tree
It was a kit that came with shears and wire.
I trimmed some and wire it, and this was the result
My daughter saw it, and wanted to try it out. So I picked up some junipers from Lowes.
This is hers before
And after
Mine before
And after
I guess we'll see if we can keep these trees alive. If so it might be a fun hobby to share with her.
I'm already thinking - if these trees thrive - of setting up monkey poles in the backyard to showcase the trees.

the mineral soil recipe that tigerlaff introduced in the tropical fruit thread would also work very well for bonsai
The coolest bonsai I’ve seen is at the botanical garden in Norfolk VA they have a large bonsai area and there’s a large display of bonsai bald cypress, complete with knees and mosses. The trees are all about 24” and look like they are centuries old. It is really cool

It's super wild when there's like a little 100 year old tree in a post/vessel that's only like 3 inches deep. When I'm doom scrolling and a bonsai post comes across I usually watch a a couple.

There's a bonsai place in Folsom, Underhill, that has a large cypress bonsai

Ivw been into bonsai for a couple years. The hardest part is actually styling correctly or at least trying to make it look appealing and appropriate. It's fun but you will kill trees in the process. I'd suggest trident maples. They are pretty hardy and grow like crazy.
My junipers just never do well and I'm kinda over them. They can be amazing but that's 20 years away really. I think I'm just doing maple bonsai's. I have almost 40 different Japanese maples planted around my house and I can air layer and root cuttings off of those for free.

I want one of these so bad but I'm not patient enough for it.

I'll give those a look.
I started with juniper because they are the most recognizable, and everything I saw said they were easy to shape and take care of. We'll see I guess.

I follow them on facebook. Not sure if I'm ready to join a society yet.
Looks like they have an annual bonsai auction and sale in August. I may go check that out if we are still going strong.

I went last year and had a good time. They had a really nice selection of trees for auction and they all sold for a pretty cheap bargain all things considered.

I've tortured my fair share of $10 nana junipers into a bonsai like shapes. I have determined that is my best course of action as there is no way I can keep up with proper bonsai's watering needs through our summers. One vacation and my stuff would all be dead.
Those junipers last years for me, give me the same general satisfaction and a lot more instant satisfaction.
I love conifers, and long to move somewhere with more options due to climate. I have really enjoyed my Japanese Black Pine Thunderhead trees. I need to clean them as as they are growing like crazy. About 5 years in on them so far.
Current growth one one

When I bought them
Planted year 1

Maas Nursery outside of Houston. They were the best foo dogs I had seen after shopping for a while. I figured out they are made by this company. You may be able to find a dealer with their finder.

$265 a piece back in 2021. They're concrete, but not crude like a lot of the raw concrete statuary you see. They were finished like you see. Super heavy little bastards. Online it claims 100lbs each, but I think they may be heavier than that even. It was a splurge, but I'd found some up on Florida Blvd by the Sonnys BBQ that were OK and they wanted $245 each there.

I’ve always thought I would like bonsai, and planned to get into it when I retired and had more time. Now retired and realize you are too damn old to start bonsai when you retire!
