Spec Trout fishing disaster, had to release a 26 inches in Corpus Christi bay this morning

With the very high spring tides, the water comes back and brings the trout with it into Corpus Christi bay. We got on the big ones this morning. Slot is 15-20 inches. 1 big one for every 4 under slot. Limit is 3. Took about an hour for fishing buddy and I to put 5 18-20 inches in box. Buddy sez the last one of the limit is always the hardest to catch. Bad juju. His next cast hooks up a 26 inches , half a foot over the slot limit. Could have feed 4 people with that big one. And we turned it loose after a picture. Took about 10 minutes to catch the next 19 incher . Back at boat launch for 930 am. DOA under a popping cork.

How is that a disaster? Sounds like a good day.

I enjoy letting those breeders go after a couple pics. The 19” may eat a little better and have less worms. Definitely not a disaster.

Exactly. Caught some fish to eat and let the trophy go after some Catch Photo Release

Some older folks still judge the quality of their trip based on the number of filets they throw into zip locks, a lot of which end up in the trash after freezer burn hits. Luckily that mind set is dieing off, all we heard about is how no one was going to go fishing to keep 3 trout. Guess what, there has been zero less pressure observed.

one 20 inch spec, filleted cut into four pieces. Dust lightly on both sides frying in a quarter inch of vegetable oil, turn over 3 time in skillet. remove and set aside keeping warm. toast a quarter cup of almond slivers in a half stick of butter till slightly brown. Arrange on two plates with a side of fresh green beans and spoon almond butter over cooked filets. Wife and I favorite fish presentation and only one fish required.
the disaster was the buddy saying the "hardest to catch was the last legal one" and being presented with one a half foot over sized. "tongue in cheek for the bait fisherman."

The guides in LA who were catastrophizing on par with adolescent females are now loving only having to keep 15 fish and no guide limits. Ended up working out really well from a business perspective for them

Ain’t no drama like fishing guide drama.
WL&F hit a home run with trout and red limit revisions IMO.
Bet I have released over a 100 reds this year that would’ve been boxed prior to the change, that’s success.

It is true. It really is. You should hear the conversations down here about the Gag Grouper. Its like children fighting over who gets the last cookie... Crazy
I guess ive done it long enough not to get to fired up over things. Just try to give customers a good trip and a enjoyable experience.
I had a customer get a nice over Friday. I dont fish a lot of Speckled trout but there are a good many smaller ones here. We just dont have the big gators like you guys have. Not as many anyway. Our slot is similar to yours. 15-19 with one over per vessel.

I’m an “older folk” but I’m all about C&R and reasonable limits.

You should want to throw the 26" fish back.

Spots, did you see the NOAA announcement yesterday about Gag grouper season? Open September 1st and running 25-34 days due to not meeting the quota last year. AJ's open the same day and is expected to run 40-45 days
I'm booked on a 3 day September 1st for Gag, been doing this trip the last few years and crushing them.
