I joked about bringing back P-51s to hunt drones. Well, guess what?

Look at Air Tractor.
The workhorse is the 602 model which is about $1.8 million.
The larger 802 is about $2.8 million.
The military version with rockets for ground attack goes for about $5-6 million. But who needs rockets? A couple of 20mm cannons in the wings would be massive drone interceptors.
And the chemical spray tank carries 600g of liquid. Convert that to fuel and you're talking about an 8 hour loiter time.
Total operating cost of less than $1000 per hour.

There's a great Hogan's Heroes where Buchalter bribes Hogan to steal a P-51 and fly it back to Germany

I still don't get why we had to buy a foreign plane when we could have done something really badass and actually brought back the Mustang.

You hunt drones with drones or eventually whoever is flying the old airplane is going to be taking a parachute ride.

They're pretty cheap and already being made.

I would imagine the few flyable P-51s out there are in private hands. I knew a guy here in BR who owned one. Kept it at the airport.
The rest are museum pieces. The government scrapped a good number of them once they were out of service.

The P-51 is a cool plane. If I’m bringing back a WW2 fighter to use as an anti drone plane then I would go with the F-4 U Corsair. Don’t know why but I was always fond of that one growing up. I used to put together a lot of models and stuff.

I was always a Corsair guy myself. Such beautiful lines.

I grew up watching “Black Sheep Squadron”. Pappy Boyington was one of my heroes growing up.

The old owner of the flying service in Welsh, LA had a black P-51 with the Merlin.
It was badass when he would put it through its paces.

Yeah I was a fan of that show myself.

I watched a video not long ago about how this German Ace during WW2 got to fly a captured P-51. The German pilot said that it was the best plane of the war. I can’t remember the name of it but it was an interesting video. If I can remember the name of it I will pass it along because it was a pretty interesting watch.

USAF already has orders for the Air Tractor, which beat out the Super Tacano in their bid/trial process.

Depends. Are there specks and reds in the Strait? If so, cost is no obstacle.

From the link you provided it appears the Air Tractor is only armed with missiles and rockets. I’d imagine they’ll want to add wing mounted .50s for anti-drone work.

Wasn't this one part of the confederate air force before it disbanded?
CAF
If it's the same plane, I got to take a flight in it in 1980 when it 1st returned to air worthiness.

Just asked Grok. They got grouper, snapper, tuna, cobia, mackerel and bream.
And some drum.
