Does anyone today have Tiger's Sunday kill mode?

I think a lot of what made Tiger the greatest was his Sunday attitude. He went out there to destroy the field. He wanted to beat down everyone by 20 strokes.

Nobody seems to have that these days.

Big Fleetwood fan.. But he's a great example of having absolutely zero killer mentality on the course.

And yeah, I know Tiger's actually skill made him the greatest for the most part. But that paired up with his attitude made him the most intimidating competitor in golf.

I think Scheffler has a pretty good weekend game along with overall skill. But seems lately he's dug a hole too deep on Thurs/Fri.

This is exactly what I think as well, when he's got a lead going into the weekend, he doesn't lose. He has definitely dug a hole for himself in tournaments this year and seems to always come back and at least be in the top 10.

Scotty played bogey-free all weekend.

Rory sprayed his driver all over the place the whole tournament. He was overaggressive on 12, hit the best drive of all time on 13, mishit his approach shot on 15 almost into the drink, airmailed 16 and went into the trees on 18.

He was -13 and up by 2 going into the final hole.

Being in Tiger kill mode is not about playing well. It's about scoring well. It's about making birdies and avoiding bogey and worse despite yourself. Rory had it yesterday.

Tiger shot 70+ on Sunday in 7 of his 15 majors

ETA: actually, in 14 of his 15 majors, he held the lead going into the final round.

I think it had more to do with his “kill mode” over the first 3 days. I guess by “kill mode” you could mean his ability to not choke away a lead on a Sunday

Not even Tiger had that most days. You remember the 1997 Masters, and the 2000 US Open, but you forget that most of his wins he grinded it out until the end. You forget that he won the 1999 PGA with an even par final round and beat a 19 year old Sergio Garcia by 1 stroke. You forget that after holing "the chip" on 16 at the 2005 Masters, Tiger bogeyed 17 ahd 18 to card a 71 and had to beat Chris DiMarco in a playoff.

Win a major golf championship his hard. It's not common to simply run away from the field.

Jack had 18 wins and 19 seconds in majors.

It’s hard to win even IF you put yourself in the race to the finish.

I think tournament golf is harder now than ever.
The juniors are better.
The college players are better.
The KF guys are better.

These fields are deep.

Tiger brought bigger purses and made golf cool for a bigger more athletic group of guys.

Bro did you even watch Tiger? He rarely ran away with it.

Honestly his greatest strength was simply not melting like 95% of his competition did. He could win most tournaments without doing anything spectacular simply because he didn't do many, if any, things that were dumb.

Tiger was a machine in that he played perfect strategy whereas the rest of his competition would lose discipline and press, which most often led to meltdowns. Tiger never had that issue.

We'll agree to disagree. I don't think there is anyone in pro golf who doesn't go out on any day, let alone a Sunday, with the intention of beating the competition. I'd argue that "destroying the field" is what leads to mistakes that takes people out of contention.
Tiger's immense skill allowed him to do things others can't/couldn't. But I don't think he approached Sundays with a killer instinct. He played smart golf but had the talent to do things most others couldn't.

Look at his last Masters win. Four people hit into the water while Woods played it smart and safe on #12. Thats not trying to destroy the field. Thats playing smart. Being able to marry god given talent with smart play is what made Tiger a GOAT.

One of Tiger's best attributes that never seems to get talked about is his ability to play smart and conservative when necessary. A less aggressive Rory might have 8 majors by now. Phil would certainly have a few more.

Most of the time it's ok to just hit it to 30 feet and two putt.

Which was all the time. He never played aggressively really. A lot of those shots where it appears he's pin seeking he wasn't. He just missed his target, but his target was such that the miss might actually work in his favor and at worst, wouldn't kill him. That's the foundation of modern strategy, which Tiger implemented and followed to perfection.

'97 Mercedes playoff is a perfect example of this. He put it to like 6 inches after his opponent put it into the water, but that wasn't even close to where Tiger was aiming. He was aiming way right of the pin, but pulled it. He missed, but his target was such that a miss was ok. Had he hit that exact same shot, but actually aimed at the pin, he'd have been in the water too.

My idea of Tiger kill mode is about playing well but for the reason of beating the crap out of the competition. Being completely locked it. All business. Not talking to your playing partner.

And then beating them all by 10 strokes. There's a reason people are nervous about playing with Tiger. I'm sure the crowds around Tiger didn't help with nerves either.

He does. But not intimidating. Scottie had a great Saturday round.

Yeah, seems like I may have a bit of selective memory with Tiger...

Yeah, I was gonna say I'm not averaging it 340 off the tee...

when he did that, he generally built up a massive lead going into the final round. TBH, Tiger hasn't historically gone super low in final rounds. He had a few early in his career where he blew everyone away, but most of his major wins after "the tiger slam" were him hovering around even par in the final round and him winning by 1-3 strokes. He won 3 of his majors in a playoff

Tiger's strategy on weekends and especially Sunday was to let everyone else frick up. He was uncommonly good at being consistent Sunday and not making the big error. That's not to say he never had huge final rounds, but his sunday mindset was unbelievably conservative, he's admitted as much.

We have a 9 hole Monday afternoon scramble at 5. Blind draw two-man scramble and all the holes (we only have 9) are par 3's. It's a skins game a so usually birdies win a skin. I just won our annual Masters draft, took Rory so 20 bucks turned into 155.00. Then Monday threw 3 birdies at the field, and one was the only good skin where I sunk a putt just off the green. Again, another 20 brought me and my partner 95.00 each.
