For those of you who can't eat meat because of Ash Wed., what are your dining options today?
I'm thinking sushi for lunch.
Any good fish sandwiches around?

My non-catholic husband and I get into this conversation every year. He thinks we (catholics) are crazy for thinking that we can eat seafood when we claim "we can't eat meat."

If I had to get a meal with no meat I would go to Chelsea's and get the grilled cheese and tomato basil soup.

The not eating meat thing was for people to make sacrifices. I like how in Louisiana that is one of the few things ALL catholics follow/pratice. You can not eat a ham sandwich or hamburger so you eat shrimp poboy, seafood gumbo not much of a sacrifice eh..

Our priest went into this before.....basically saying that it shouldn't be an opportunity to party and eat better than you do when it is not lent.

didn't you know the whole idea of eating seafood during lent came about because one of the popes was a fish monger? he wanted to find a way to get people to buy more seafood, thus the invention of not eating meat on lent. seafood is meat, its just stupid to think otherwise.
in conclusion giving up "meat" for lent is stupid. it's about sacraficing to bring yourself closer to God. give up something that is truly difficult. maybe fast food, or smoking, or alcohol. just saying...

all i'm saying is that if you are going to truly give up meat for lent, then seafood has to be included. it is hypocritical.

i'm a catholic and you are partly right. it was vatican 1 who decided, because of the fact that the fishing industry (which was basically all that they had) was in shambles, they made a catholic law which stated that fish was no-longer a meat. kinda like what they did with ducks during the great depression. if you lived below I 10 and you were catholic, it was acceptable to eat ducks during lent.
