On the off chance that Trump actually wants to follow through with his maniacal rantings, what happens if his subordinates just refuse to carry out the orders?

Sure. They're compelled to carry out legal commands. That is clear.

Bridges and power plants have been legitimate targets in every past conflict. The military uses them for command and movement.

Well see, the guy sitting next to the Cent Com commander is a JAG, his job is to inform the commander if the actions are legal etc.

90% of Trump criticism is always about things that haven’t happened

I'm asking a question. It's hypothetical. It is not criticism of Trump.

Refusing to obey presidential orders is a federal crime. And power plants can still qualify as military targets.

Here's another little tidbit for you, that JAG also makes a determination on the types of munitions used.

Useful information

Turns out you actually can make meaningful contributions here. You should do it more often.

As a former JAG, let me help you a little. An “illegal order” broadly speaking is an order to violate the laws of armed conflict (consists of more than the Geneva Conventions). Bombing infrastructure is a common act in armed conflict.
